As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.

The Fountain Reverie features soft, rippling arpeggios with a contrasting middle section. As with the Festival Toccata, published at the same time, the brilliance of Fountain Reverie disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively, and it plays well on many different Organs.Percy Fletcher was an English composer, conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres, including His Majesty's Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductorfor the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chow which ran for five years, a record that remained unbroken for forty years. In addition to his myriad works of light music, Fletcher also wrote a serious church cantata, The Passion of Christ, as well as the delightful children's work, The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Born in 1965, Thierry Escaich studied in Paris where he obtained eight first prizes for Organ and Composition. His performances and works during his professional career have also received various distinctions, Three Sketches for Organ being no exception. Composed in 1991, Three Sketches is very modern, exploiting tonality, rhythm, harmony, and many other elements to a virtuosic level. Esciach's is a great improvisation expert and Three Sketches reflects aspects of this through use of complex rhythms and developed melodies. With a typical performance lasting around 11 minutes, the Three Sketches are called, 1) Tournament, 2) Ritual, and 3) Variations on a Memory. For all advanced organists seeking to vary and expand their contemporary repertoire, Esciach's Three Sketches is an exciting addition to the repertoire..

Please note: this edition has nothing to do with Arnold Schonberg! The Schonberg in question is a town near Kronberg in Germany's hilly Taunus region. Around the turn of the last century, the organist Ludwig Sauer (1861-1940) wanted to have a new organ built at his church there and came up with a novel way to finance it: he asked a number of composers to donate a musical piece. He eventually obtained 36 (!) pieces which he grouped together in the Organ Album for the Benefit of the New Organ in Schonberg by L. Sauer and had published in 1900 by Breitkopf & Hartel. Deserving particular mention is Max Reger's popular Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor, which was printed for the first time in that collection and which no doubt helped Sauer's project make organ history. The Schonberger Orgelalbum contains both free pieces and works based on chorales. Thanks to the brevity of the pieces, the book is ideal for use in teaching and in the religious service..

It is no coincidence that the Toccata from Widor's Vth Organ Symphony is his best-known composition. Who can resist its thrilling verve? Not only this, but also the other movements of this unique work of the organ repertoire win you over immediately - the first with its march-like, majestic, much-varied theme; the second with its wonderfully elegiac oboe melody, flowing along over staccato sixteenth notes; and the two slow movements, of which the melancholy, almost static Adagio forms the greatest contrast imaginable to the following triumphal Toccata. The Carus Urtext edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor's lifetime. The corrections which the composer made after the publication of this edition have also been taken into consideration. As well as this, earlier editions have been consulted for comparison to clarify individual variant readings. Editorial suggestions on the performance of individual passages complete the new edition. Widor's early organ symphonies op. 13 have a quite special character because of their suite-like structure. The six-movement Symphony II also combines different types of movement in an unusual way; for example, it includes a Praeludium Circulare, which explores all the twelve keys, a Salve Regina based on the Gregorian antiphon of the same name, and a grand Toccata as the Finale, an interesting precursor of the famous Toccata from the 5th Symphony. The Carus edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor's lifetime. This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

How vast is Mendelssohn's oeuvre? Most of his approx. 750 compositions were still unpublished in the 1960s. The publication of many early works within the framework of the Complete Edition has been gratefully noted by the musical world. Yet a scholarly, scientific overview of Mendelssohn's works was still missing. He was the last great composer of the 19th century without a complete work catalogue. Ralf Wehner's thematic catalogue closes this gap.It organizes the body of works into 26 groups and assigns each work its own MWV number. Within the groups, the individual pieces are arranged chronologically. Also included in the MWV are all known collective manuscripts and prints, information on works of dubious authenticity and on Mendelssohn's arrangements, as well as his editions of works by other composers. Wehner's work is based on the examination of material and information from more than 1,500 libraries, c. 15,000 auction catalogues and about 12,000 letters. The succinct account of the history of the work, its publication and reception gives the MWV its profile as a compact study edition. An overview on the MWV numbering system you will find on the webiste of the Sachsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig.

About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.

Trilogy on B-A-C-H (2017) uses as its musical material a familiar four-note theme: the letters B-A-C-H (the last name of Johann Sebastian Bach) treated as a musical motive: B-flat, A, C, B-natural (H in German note naming). Starting with Bach himself, this theme has been used by a truly enormous number of composers over the centuries. Most B-A-C-H themed works (at least those for organ), tend to be extremely contrapuntal, likely taking their cue from much of Bach's own organ music. This piece explicitly goes in the other direction and use the theme primarily motivically/melodically and as a generating force for the kind of mixed modality that is typical of Cooman's music. The first movement is an energetic march. The second movement is a lyric meditation containing both an arioso and a short quasi-passacaglia, in which the B-A-C-H motive repeats slowly in the pedals. The last movement is a free fantasia: the motive appears both in chorale-like long notes and as a fast, turning figure. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 12' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Composed by Jehan Alain, Three Pieces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for organ, with pedal-use. The first piece, ?Variations sur un theme de Clement Jannequin (Variations on a Clement Jannequin's Tune), should be played?in the same way as Couperin's Preludes: freshly and softly. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso, Maggiore, Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called ?Le jardin suspendu (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can't be played separately. The last piece, Litanies, is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in vivo is played only by the right hand, then followed by a?Lirico ma sempre vivo part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some vivacissimo parts, sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupre and Roger Ducasse among others, he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is Litanies.

Of Josef Rheinberger's eighteen masses, five are for unaccompanied voices, four with accompaniment by a small instrumental ensemble and nine with organ. Among the last group the leicht ausfuhrbare (easy to perform) works take a special place: Considered by their composer as purely utility music, they achieved great popularity during his lifetime and soon became part of the standard repertory of small church choirs. The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. Score available separately - see item CA.4064200.

Sonata Eroica, Op. 94 (1930) is a melodious piece composed by Joseph Jongen for great organ. Dedicated to Joseph Bonnet who was the organist of the St Eustache Church in Paris, this piece is quite difficult (upper intermediate/advanced level) and requires the use of different keyboard divisions and pedals. Lasting around 16 minutes, this wonderful work is quite architectural and will astonish you by its grandeur. It is the perfect piece to include in a recital. Joseph Jongen was a Belgian organist, composer and professor of harmony and counterpoint. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome and composed numerous pieces including music chamber works, symphonies, concertos and songs. His most famous piece is the Symphonie Concertante (1926).

The Celestial Banquet, by Olivier Messiaen is one of his earliest compositions. Written for organ, this piece lasts 7 minutes because of its slow tempo that gives it a timeless feeling. This piece is quite challenging and would require an advanced technical level. Written in Octatonic mode, The Celestial Banquet used a theme that was transposed twice for less monotony. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer who was also passionate about ornithology. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its color and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, color and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Volu me 3 of the Complete Edition contains the Mass in A minor op. 197, which was the last work Rheinberger ever composed. The Mass was left unfinished, since he died while working on it. Only the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, through the et resurrexit were completed. However the remainder of the Credo has been preserved in the form of sketches. These are published in the present edition for the first time. In addition, the sketches were carefully completed and prepared for performance by the editor. This version is published in the appendix of this volume.
