Sadie Harrison's Ha llristningsomra det for solo Double Bass.Composed and published 2016.Duration c. 10 minutesThe area of Tanumshede is situated on the south western coast of Sweden. Archaeologically it is renowned for its unique series of Bronze Age rock carvings dating from between c. 1800 to 500 BCE. Incised into over 600 panels the petroglyphs were originally situated along a 25 mile stretch of fjord coastline and as such there are many depictions of Hjortspring boats and seafaring activities. There are also scenes of hunting agricultural and livestock farming and warring with many armoured figurescarrying swords axes and shields. Whilst it is possible to interpret most carvings as images of quotidian life the meaning of some panels is less clear. It is likely that several scenes depict ritual acts overseen by gods often surrounded by abstract symbols - crosses dots and ‘cups’ the significance of which is now unknown. As well as being a source of information about Scandinavian Bronze Age weapons vehicles tools ships even hairstyles the carvings have also been the subject of debates about gender. The society depicted on the rocks seems overwhelmingly patriarchal making the rare carvings of probable female figures particularly important. The most famous of these is known as The Grieving Woman apparently weeping over a dead warrior from a ship. Her grief ‘heavy as rocks’ is heard in the opening movement of the piece echoing through the remaining movements and giving the work its dark melancholy character. The Woman returns in the final movement as a ghost her footsteps coming closer and closer as her ‘lover’s’ ship is rebuilt over and over again. Movement III is gentler in tone a song for the Woman and her lover - depicted as a couple rolling a giant sun surrounded by farm animals. Movement II represents the enigmatic Juggler or Calendar Man who holds 29 spheres in his hand - perhaps

The story of the Dutch sea-captain cursed to wander the earth unendingly featured three themes that were of enduring interest to Wagner: the Wanderer on his Quest Redemption through Self-sacrifice and Pre-destined Love. The story is that a storm drives Daland's ship off course. A ghostly schooner arrives and its captain the Flying Dutchman steps ashore. He is bound to his ship as he once pledged to sail around the Cape of Good Hope if it took him forever. Once every seven years he may leave his ship in search of a woman who will save him from his deathless wandering if she is faithful until death. Daland offers his daughter Senta’s hand in marriage. As theyapproach the village Senta’s suitor Erik notices she is preoccupied. He relates a frightening dream in which he saw her sail away with the Dutchman and Senta exclaims that this is her own dream as well and pledges her faithfulness to him. Erik is not happy and insists that Senta is his. The Dutchman overhearing believes himself betrayed and sets sail. Senta runs to the top of a cliff proclaiming herself faithful unto death and leaps into the sea. Their ghostly forms are seen together ascending to Heaven. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an essay by W.J. Henderson and an English translation of Wagner's text by Troutbeck and Baker.

A ghost story telling of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Hebrides. This is a mystery story in the form of a chamber opera. The prologue is set as a court of enquiry into the unexplaineddisappearance of the three keepers from a lighthouse. Questions are posed by a solo horn which may sound from among the audience and three officers give answer. Gradually they move from straight testimony into fantasticalimaginings of evil during a 'flashback' to the lighthouse; but then we snap back to the courtroom. In the main act the three singers become the vanished keepers. They have been together for months long enough to be fullyaware of each other's weaknesses; petty bickerings suggest a relationship which is stable but liable to become highly unstable at any moment. They sing songs to reduce the tension Blazes beginning with a rough ballad of streetviolence accompanied by violin and banjo. Sandy's song with cello and out-of-tune upright piano is a thinly disguised description of sexual bliss and Arthur's with brass and clarinet is a tub-thumping hymn. But the songsserve only to resurrect in their minds ghosts from the past and as the fog descends each of the keepers becomes convinced that he is being claimed by the Beast. They prepare to meet its dazzling eyes which become the lights ofthe relief vessel and the three men reappear as officers met at the lighthouse only by an infestation of rats. They leave and at the end the last hours of Blazes Sandy and Arthur begin to play over again.Vocal score withpiano reduction of the instrumental score. Duration c. 1h 25mins.

Chamber opera in a prologue and one act. A ghost story telling of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Hebrides. This is a mystery story in the form of a chamber opera. The prologue is set as a courtof enquiry into the unexplained disappearance of the three keepers from a lighthouse. Questions are posed by a solo horn which may sound from among the audience and three officers give answer. Gradually they move from straighttestimony into fantastical imaginings of evil during a 'flashback' to the lighthouse; but then we snap back to the courtroom. In the main act the three singers become the vanished keepers. They have been together for months long enough to be fully aware of each other's weaknesses; petty bickerings suggest a relationship which is stable but liable to become highly unstable at any moment. They sing songs to reduce the tension Blazes beginning with arough ballad of street violence accompanied by violin and banjo. Sandy's song with cello and out-of-tune upright piano is a thinly disguised description of sexual bliss and Arthur's with brass and clarinet is a tub-thumpinghymn. But the songs serve only to resurrect in their minds ghosts from the past and as the fog descends each of the keepers becomes convinced that he is being claimed by the Beast. They prepare to meet its dazzling eyes whichbecome the lights of the relief vessel and the three men reappear as officers met at the lighthouse only by an infestation of rats. They leave and at the end the last hours of Blazes Sandy and Arthur begin to play overagain.Libretto only. Duration c. 1h 25mins.
