A great piece for developing players to learn the sensibilities of the classical period, Doris Gazda has taken 3 beautiful waltzes from Sechs Deutsche Tanze fur Orchester, Kv. 509, originally written by Mozart as an orchestral work, and combined and arranged them for easy string orchestra. The arrangement is extremely playable and is a wonderful way to encourage legato playing as well as good rhythmic execution.

The Annaberger Chorbuch II is the second part of the sole surviving musical source from the music collections of the church library of Annaberg in the Erz Mountains. It was long housed there until it was acquired in 1968 by the Sachsische Landesbibliothek Dresden and restored. The two volumes contain many anonymous compositions which considerably expand the previously published repertory of German music from the early 16th century. This elevates the work manuscript to the rank of an important source. It contains a variety of pieces in all sacred genres and generally in four-part writing: masses, single mass movements, Magnificat settings, motets and a collection of hymns and Introit pieces. Thanks to concordances, certain pieces can be attributed to composers such as Antoine Brumel, Loyset Compere, Alexander Agricola and Heinrich Isaac.New additions to the repertoire of ca. 1500.

Followin g the Renaissance volume, this time it is Baroque works (more precisely, transcriptions of Baroque vocal and instrumental works) that are presented in the Leggierissimo series, extending the repertoire of junior string orchestras. Roughly half of the selection consists of well-known pieces by the greatest composers of the period (Purcell: Dido and Aeneas, Rameau: Pi ces de clavecin, Händel: Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks, J.S. Bach: B major partita, C major orchestral suite), but works by composers less well known nowadays (for example, G. Böhm and J. C. F. Fischer) are also included, together with such unusual items as Polish, German and Hungarian dancesfrom 17th- and 18th-century Hungarian manuscripts: the Kájoni and Vietórisz codexes, and Eleonóra Lányi s music book.

Hava Nagila (the title means ‘let us rejoice’) is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called ‘klezmer’. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible.
