Noël , the French word for “Christmas”, has been used to identify a genre of organ works for the Christmas Season since the time of the French Baroque Period. Noëls (carols and shepherd songs) provided organists with the opportunity to improvise variations on recognizable tunes in and out of worship during the Christmas Season. This collection provides a critical and practical edition of selected works.

The young Alsatian organist was on a familiar footing with the organ music of his time both in France and Germany, and his valuable observations fulfilled a genuine function as intermediary between the two traditions. Indeed, with the interest in late-romantic organ music on the rise, Schweitzer's comments are, if anything, even more important to organists of today.

Lemare's compositions are uneven in quality, but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style, but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance, as does the romantic, chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world's highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900's, drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period, he began the life of a travelling recitalist, beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900, a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ, allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.
The Trois Impressions shows Karg-Elert both at his most Romantic and his most impressionistic. The movements' nocturnal names - Harmonies du Soir, Claire de Lune and La Nuit - are in French as the work is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant, the great French Organist of Trinity church in Paris

The Rottenburg Toccata develops the choral melody of 'Sankt Martin, dir ist anvertraut' in the virtuosic style of french romantic toccatas. The work is articulated in three sections with contrasted textures: opening variation of the melody with sextuplet figurations, middle variation with a peasant rhythmicalcharacter in the minor mode and conclusion presenting the choral melody on the pedal.

This work has busy hands but under-used feet. It is not a toccata in the full blooded French style; it is more like a 'baroque concerto grosso'.

This fantasia for organ was composed in 2019. The composition is based on a melody attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (approx. 1510–1560) which is one of the most well-known melodies in the Christian musical tradition. It has also been sung to various other texts, such as Lutheran chorales. In Bach’s work, the melody appears in the cantata “Lord God, we praise Thee all of us” BWV 130.The composer has retained the style of French Romanticism. The character of the work corresponds to the content of the text and culminates in a festive finale. This music is suitable for many church music occasions.

Alexandre Guilmant was one of the greatest representatives of the French Romantic organ school, and composed almost exclusively for his instrument. A rare exception is this “Morceau symphonique,” written in 1902 for the Paris Conservatoires annual trombone class competition. The charming piece soon found its way into the repertoire – as did Saint-Saëns's “Cavatine” (HN 1119) – and is today among the essential standard works of trombone literature. The “Morceau symphonique” is here offered in its first-ever Urtext edition, based on the autograph and the first edition. We also offer here a particularly special treat: the sight-reading piece that Guilmant wrote for the same competition, which had until now slumbered in the archives and is here published for the very first time.

Tant um ergo Sacramentum (Therefore so great a Sacrament). Saint Saens wrote two settings of this music, this one being unpublished without an opus number. It is a short liturgical piece he wrote in 1860 while working as a young church organist at L'Eglise da la Madeleine. The music, originally written for 2 sopranos, alto, organ and optional chorus is very simple in nature with a religious and atmospheric feel to it.Mr. Couturier has done a wonderful job arranging this 4-minute work for 8-part Brass Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.
