Schubert was visibly adventurous in his early piano sonatas, as is apparent in their wide-ranging key schemes, diverging versions of many movements or entire sonatas, and numerous works left incomplete. This revised Urtext edition contains the sonatas he composed between 1815 and 1817. Published within the â??Signatureâ?? Volume Three includes the final four of his twelve fantastic Sonatas as well as several unfinished pieces. All composed between 1815 and 1828 these range from popular favourites to mere fragments only a few bars long. Even in the earliest of thesesonatas Schubert demonstrates his compositional poeticism sensitivity and skill in the romantic idiom. For a broad scope of emotion and feeling they are second only to Beethovenâ??s sonatas.

Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata’s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli’s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert’s autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli’s arrangement.

Une bonne intention n’est jamais assez bonne (d’après Kurt Tucholsky): l’Arpeggione, cette sorte d’hybride – une grande guitare frottée par un archet – n’a jamais réussi à s’imposer auprès des musiciens. Cette curiosité organologique serait certainement déjà tombée depuis longtemps dans l’oubli le plus total si précisément Franz Schubert n’avait pas composé sa sonate en La mineur pour cet instrument. Et cette oeuvre en trois mouvements est vraiment immortelle. Mais elle pose aussi un problème pour l’Urtext, car sans certaines interventions dans le texte, la partie d’arpeggione originale ne pourrait être exécutée sur l’instrument le plus proche au niveau du timbre, àsavoir l’alto ou le violoncelle. La maison d’édition G. Henle résout ainsi le dilemme: d’une part, la partie d’arpeggione originale est superposée à la partie de piano originale (partition), de l’autre, dans la partie séparée jointe à la partition les rares changements d’octaves indispensables sont clairement indiqués. Il était hors de question pour nous d’envisager une autre partie – le violon par exemple (comme dans l’édition Diabelli parue après la mort du compositeur), la flûte ou tout autre instrument mélodique à tessiture aiguë – car toutes ces alternatives s’écartent trop des représentations de timbre que pouvait avoir Schubert. Schubert's Sonata In A Minor subtitled Arpeggione was written in 1824 and was inspired by an instrument invented by Mr. Georg Staufer which Schubert referred to as an Arpeggione. The instrument was a mixture of a Guitar and a Cello and was held between the knees like a Cello but had frets on the fingerboard like a Guitar. This edition of the work has been wonderfully arranged for Flute and Piano by Peter Lukas Graf.

In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. Robert Schumann who regarded them as parts of a four-movement sonata drew attention to the second collection published by Diabelli in 1839 in hisreview.For the first time this scholarly-critical Urtext edition presents the musical text of the 'New Schubert Edition' in new engraving and with optimum page-turns.
