Harvesting the World is the tenth in the series of WGRG liturgy booklets. It contains a full liturgy which is ideal for harvest, celebrating the gifts of the earth an its people. Additionally, it includes elelments specifically designed, in collaboration with The Balmore Trust, Rainbow Turtle, and Just Trading (Scotland), who together have initiated a project to aid the education of the children of rice farmers in Malawi: The 90kg of Rice Project. Material specific to the project can be found at the end of the booklet. However the liturgical material stands on its own independent of whether or not a local church is involved in the 90kg of Rice Project and provides an excellent resource for reflection on the inter-dependent nature of our contemporary world, raising awareness of the implications of our lifestyles and the demands of justice.

Jyrk i Linjama composed Sonata da chiesa I for piano as a commission from the Carinthischer Sommer festival in Austria and premiered by Juho Pohjonen at Ossiach Abbey in summer 2010. The title alludes to the sonata tradition of the Baroque at its weightiest and most solemn. The polyphonic church sonata with its strict adherence to form for a long time occupied an important role in the liturgy (as distinct from the sonata da camera). Linjama’s modern application of this tradition articulates features of the liturgy: breathing, bells, shades of darkness and light. The closed Miserere of the opening movement opens out in the middle movements to let in light, which the angelic song of the last movement once again encloses in translucent twilight. Each of the four movements uses a medieval melody as its material.

Missa brevis for mixed choir and eight wind instruments Op. 5 was created in 1951 and premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival of Contemporary Music the following year. The Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) was composed using a modal technique drawing on medieval examples. The use of wind instruments adds to the rich sound of the choir, thus expanding the sound spectrum in an interesting way. The piece is suitable for both liturgy and concert. Hummel wrote a music which is easy to play by all performers and delights the listeners immediately.
