Up to now, the Dutch composer and performer Karel van Steenhoven, founder member of the renowned Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet, has mainly written demanding concert literature for the recorder. Now he has added an easy work for beginners to the recorder repertoire: 'A Musical Journey' was composed for two young recorder pupils and leads through different stylistic eras of European music history. Van Steenhoven was inspired by an old tune from Ancient Greek which moves from classical antiquity via the Middle Ages and Baroque era to jazz, swing and modern music in 14 short character pieces. In a playful and humorous way, children are thus introduced to the different styles of music. An excursion of educational value without missing out on fun and pleasure.

WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of ‘La Valse’ was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke’s The Unknown Journey (2014) forconcert band, and the use of Ravel’s La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke’s aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer’s view is that little inmusic does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. Asthe music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master. WINNAAR EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of ‘La Valse’ is geschreven voor de Britse Cory Band als keuzewerk voor de Europese Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2016 in Lille. De oorsprong ligt in Sparkes The Unknown Journey (2014) voorharmonieorkest.

In 2014, Chanticleer commissioned me to make a new arrangement of the Hungarian-Romani folk song Jarba, Mare Jarba for their 2014 touring program. Passed down orally through the Romani communities, this beautiful folk song, with text in a language called Beas (beh-osh), speaks of a deep longing to visit one's homeland, a place where the singer can never return. Chanticleer consists of twelve men whose vocal ranges span from low bass to high soprano, equivalent to the range of a mixed choir of women and men. I composed slow sections of original material to represent the singers' longing to return home; these are interspersed with the folk song's traditional fast sections. The incorporated shouts and calls in the score are typically found in the performance of Central European folk songs. I hope you enjoy singing this new version of Jarba, Mare Jarba that contains all of the vigor and excitement of the Chanticleer version. PERFORMANCE NOTES All spoken sounds (indicated by x noteheads) should be performed by individuals. Feel free to elaborate with more sounds of your own in the tradition of Eastern European folk music. If the piece is memorized, feel free to experiment with clapping on the off-beats of m. 93 to the end. A Journey Through 300 Years of Publishing-House HistoryHow to get 300 years of a company's history, combined with an equally long period of music and cultural history, between two book covers in a sophisticated and sensible way? How to select from the nearly incalculable quantity of material, how to separate essentials from what is less important? The start of the narrative is easy to find in the events of January 1719, though not so, where and when a break or even a turning point along its course ought to be made. During the last three years, our editor Thomas Frenzel has been confronted daily with such daunting questions. The result is not just a chronicle or publishing-house history. You will rather be granted a keyhole glimpse, and you will be taken on a journey through 300 years of European music and cultural history. Illustrated is the formation of the entire music publishing industry as well as the emergence of Leipzig as a city of music and the center of the world book trade, together with the fact that Breitkopf & Hartel significantly contributed to both developments. The highest standards of content, paper, printing, and binding emphasize the intrinsic value of this Breitkopf & Hartel production - unique in 300 years.504 pages in full color printing Chronicle of the firm's important events Essays on selected topicsHistorical visual and textual documents, anecdotes and all sorts of curiosities High-quality linen covers with dust jacketAbout 620 illustrations.

The range of themes treated is vast, proof of the central nature of the instrument in European musical life on the cusp of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. On the basis of original research, investigations have been made into the different ways in which the spread of instruments and printed music occurred; into the movements of musicians circulating from one end of Europe to the other; into the circulation of genres, forms, musical styles and stylistic elements conveyed including through the teaching of the instrument; into the presence of the pianoforte in the European literature and the arrangements for instruments at the beginning of the nineteenth century; into the role of the pianoforte in certain important centres in Europe and the United States. A rich period for European music, therefore, in which the opportunities for contact and mutual exchange among the musicians were particularly intense and in which the pianoforte acted as a catalyst in private and public musical life in all the cities of Europe. The volume comes with the bonus of a CD, appositely providing pianoforte sonatas by Cramer, Hummel, Eberl and Beethoven.

Mic hael Nyman's Musique A Grande Vitesse (MGV) translates as ‘high speed music’ and was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North EuropeanParis-Lille line in 1993.
This piece of sheet music runs continuously, but was conceived as an abstract, imaginary journey; or rather five inter-connected journeys, each ending with a slow, mainly stepwise melody which isonly heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination.
Thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole. Throughout the piece ideas - rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, motivic, textural -constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'.
The opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9, 11, or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and aharmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally, MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic, syncopated figure (again first heard over C, E and A)begins the second section, featuring Brass, in D flat.
The topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning, description or timetables. Its tempo changes and unpredictable slowings downbear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey, while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso, with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno, was resisted: more suitably theband (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs.

By Jeffery L. Ames, Hilary Apfelstadt, Lynne Gackle, James Jordan, Jo-Michael Scheibe, and Phillip A. Swan. Compiled and edited by Hilary Apfelstadt and Jo-Michael Scheibe. Choosing repertoire is one of the most important and time-consuming tasks choral conductors undertake. And the Teaching Music through Performance in Choir series remains one of the most important resources for choir directors looking for quality repertoire that has been vetted by a distinguished panel of educators. Each volume in the series contains Teacher Resource Guides for 100 works, organized by difficulty. Selected by a team of leading choir directors, the repertoire in Volume 5 balances SATB literature with works for women’s and men’s choirs, and includes a healthy mix of selections aimed at bringing greater attention to the rich choral culture in Canada. Featuring the same team of authors as Volume 4, this volume also includes chapters that cover: “More than Spirituals and Concert Gospels: Choral Music in the Western European Tradition by Contemporary African American Composers” by Jeffery Ames, “North of the Border: Accessible Choral Music by Canadian Composers” by Hilary Apfelstadt, “Engaging the Voice, the Mind, and the Spirit: An Effective Approach toward Literature Selection with Treble Voices” by Lynne Gackle, “The Blueprint of Ensemble Musicianship Contained within Chant” by James Jordan, “It’s All About the Up: Journey, Text, Gesture, Music, and Motion” by Jo-Michael Scheibe, and “Community Collaboration: Relevant Programming that Moves Beyond the Classroom and into the Community” by Phillip Swan. Indexes by title, publisher, and composer/arranger for all five volumes of the series are included, and an extraordinary companion recording of all selections is also available. There is simply no better way to find and prepare the best choral literature available for achieving excellence in choral music education at all levels. The Teaching Music through Performance in Choir series continues to make a significant contribution to the choral arts.

The Planets, op. 80 for mezzo-soprano, flute, viola and guitar, was composed in spring 1978 and given its first performance on 30 July the same year at the Lerchenborg Music Days. The occasion which led to the composition of the work was the 50th anniversary of the finding of a block book from the second half of the 15th century with texts on the planets. The inspiration came from Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg, who organised the Lerchenborg Music Days, and the work is dedicated to her. In connection with the concert at Lerchenborg, Poul Rovsing Olsen wrote the following about his opus: The Planets derives from the block book found in Lerchenborg's library in 1928. Seven fine, coloured drawings tell of the seven celestial bodies which in many European languages have given the weekdays their names. Each drawing is accompanied by a Latin text, under which there is a two-line dictum that briefly - though very concisely - gives an account of the characteristics of the children who belong to that particular celestial body. And these concentrated portrayals form the basis for the music. In the music I have attempted to give indications of my own experience of the particular power and nature characterizing each one of the heavenly bodies, just as I have allowed this cycle of planet songs to pass like a journey through the ethereal realms with motifs that appear, are repeated, are varied and disappear (but only so as to be replaced by new ones), until we finally return to the point of departure. The introduction - Aether - is purely instrumental. Two of the planets - Venus and Luna - are female; in the music written for them small (Indian) cymbals are used that are also present in Aether..

The sextet was written for flute (doubling alto flute), clarinet doubling bass clarinet), violin, cello, piano and percussion (triangle, 3 temple blocks, 2 wood blocks, side drum, cymbal, 4 tom-toms, vibraphone, small tam-tam, median tam-tam and big tam-tam). It presents the composer lost in thought about ancient culture and modern civilization and her thinking about the parallels and contrasts between the East and the West. Near Distance takes us through a journey that covers thousands of miles and thousands of years. Contrasting moments of dense, busy activity with sparse, haunting lines the composer bridges the gap between the timeless history of her homeland and the ever-changing, energetic life in the modern society. The work was originally written under the request of Prof. Jacob Druckman, for a composition workshop at the Aspen Music Festival. It is dedicated to his memory with admiration and respect. Near Distance has been featured in Sound and Silence, a series of ten documentary films on contemporary music, which has been broadcast on the European TV network since 1989, produced by the ISCM, Adamov Films and the Polish TV.
