The composer was inspired to write these pieces by the Corridor Quartet (Gyorgy Lakatos, Mihaly Duffek, Zsofia Stefan, and Sara Rebeka Toth), with their open attitude to music and their enchanting sound world. The timbres of the bassoon harmony are emphasised still more by being joined by the double bass, and by a voice or flute soaring above them. One reviewer writes of the CD Corridoors:'Easy to listen to, but modern: modern, and yet easy to listen to. And because of the sound of the bassoons, it's spiced with a kindof fantasy mood, a kind of ''Lord of the Rings'' feel.'(jazzma.hu, Karoly Gaspar) The name of the Corridor Quartet refers to a corridor that leads the listeners between different centuries, styles, and genres. It joins things together, and acts as a bridge, many doors opening off from it: classical, modern and folk, jazz and rock. Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a jazz double bass player and composer, and an associate professor (DLA) at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.Over the last 30 years he has been an active performer on the Hungarian jazz scene, compiling and playing on many CDs. He has written music for theatres, choirs, and jazz lineups ranging from duos to big band.

Gates is the second section from the ballet MAA, scored for Chamber group, tape and live electronics. Written in 1991, commissioned by the Finnish National Opera, this work beautifully demonstrates the poeticism of Saariaho's music with a sensuous calm that permeates throughout. MAA translates from Finnish into world, earth or country. It is a complimentary title as the ballet does not have a plot as such, rather it is built around thematic archetypes such as doors, gates, stepping into new worlds, journeys and the crossing of waters. Gates can be played either as an acoustic or, often preferably, an amplified version. The acoustic version is suitable for small and resonant halls, or in a context of e.g. an early music program, in which case the piece can also be played on original instruments. This is the Full set of parts for one of Kaija Saariaho's most major works to date. Score is avilable: KP00326.

The magnificent shows at the Moulin Rouge have left their mark on the collective imagination of all who read about them. For decades, a small but spectacular band formed one of the basic ingredients in this internationally famedcabaret theatre. With the first sounds of this composition by Peter Kleine Schaars, the exciting Parisian nightlife immediately comes to mind. The musette takes us to quartier Pigalle, the red-light district of Paris, and when thedoors of the Moulin Rouge open, we hear the recognizable rhythms of a contemporary disco: a combination of the rhythmic cells 8 / 4 and 3 / 14. In addition, the composition has been highlighted with a plentiful and varied use of rhythmic cell 5. Naturally, the themes and accompaniments have been divided equally among all parts.

Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity’s best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remainsa mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises theRoman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra’s femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love thatMark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third andlast section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of thejealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar’s son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his ownlife. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History’s most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directedby Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary.

In his comic opera Banditenstreiche, Suppé uses all the qualities that have made him so well-loved by a wide audience. The appealing music is brimming with unexpected ideas and written in a light and fluent style. There’s much to enjoy with elegant arias and ensembles, pure Viennese waltzes and attractive ballet music. The arrangement of the overture contains many highlights from this opera and makes a superb light item for any concert.

The opera takes place in a dome-covered city that is part of a worldwide network of such cities, connected by travel tubes, sealed off from the outside. The time is late twenty-first century, after human beings, afraid of the wilds, have moved indoors.

TACHU N (SPRING OUTING) was composed in 2021 for “The Joy Project,†to commission uplifting works for performance at free outdoor concerts in the San Francisco Bay region. The work’s title comes from the annual Chinese festival when people go outdoors and travel, to welcome the arrival of the new Spring season. This cheerful 5-minute work features energetic melodic lines in unison, contrasting with vivid rhythmic patterns, which the composer indicates as expressing our excitement upon breathing the fresh Spring air.Tachun (Spring Outing) was commissioned by and dedicated to the Del Sol String Quartet as a part of The Joy Project in 2021. Tachun is also the name of a Chinese traditional festival when people go outdoors and travel, to welcome the arrival of the new spring season each year. Here is a statement from the Del Sol String Quartet about this project:“Del Sol has commissioned a body of short musical works written to give joy. As our gift to our community during these times, we are performing these pieces in numerous free concerts at public settings around the Bay Area — parks, schoolyards, open spaces — where people can soak up some musical “joy†while safely practicing social distancing in the open air.â€My string quartet has active melodic lines in unison, contrasting with vivid rhythmic patterns, to express our excitement when we breathe the fresh air.

I compose a piece of music each year to be premiered by our annual University of Mobile High School Honor Band. A New Horizon was composed for the 2021 Honor Band during the most challenging season in memory. Taking place during the pandemic, the Honor Band was held outdoors under a large, open tent with distancing and health protocols in place. Though not ideal and full of challenges, it was a successful, memorable and thankfully healthy event. I felt that it was important to have a joyful, upbeat, hopeful piece of music to introduce to these students and this was the result. The title itself is a reminder that hope remains and we should keep our eyes on the future: a new horizon. The tempo should remain bright and steady, articulations are critically important and need to be accurately crisp. Dynamics are intended to be dramatic, so do not be afraid to overdo - particularly dynamic swells and subito changes.I compose a piece of music each year to be premiered by our annual University of Mobile High School Honor Band. “A New Horizon†was composed for the 2021 Honor Band during the most challenging season in memory.
