Hasted Derek Hasted writes "This is a real crowd-pleaser that will suit any concert.
This arrangement is closely based on the version that the group 'Sky' played (with the electric guitar 'break') rather than the version for solo guitar. A version of my arrangement was originally performed by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and the soundclip sitting alongside this score in the SheetMusicPress shop is part of a recording they made live in Concert. That soundclip features different sizes of classical guitar, but the arrangement here is for 4 ordinary guitars - or for a bigger sound, a large ensemble.
The essence of the electric guitar solo in Sky’s arrangement is captured in this arrangement in Guitar 1a, but it’s hard to play without a cutaway guitar, so there’s a second version with the solo an octave lower in Guitar 1b. The rest of the Guitar 1 parts are identical.
Both the Guitar 1 parts and the Guitar 2 part have finger positions shown on the score - this is so that all the fast runs can be slurred, which gives the melody a nice articulation and takes some of the workload away from the right hand. If you prefer to stay in one position and pluck the runs, that works well too.
I hope you enjoy this piece!"

It is the predecessor to the toccata, requiring quick finger motion, contrapuntal writing, and often possessing an improvisatory quality. Toccare is 8 minutes and 30 seconds in duration. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1059303). Performance of my suite for guitar and orchestra by András Csáki and the Budapest Scoring Symphonic Orchestra under Péter Illényi in 2015. The suite comprises: Dreaming, Folksy Waltz, Sanctus and Benedictus, with Hosannas, and finally Distant Storm It has elements of Romantic and Renaissance music, flamenco, Latin American, a bit of Celtic square dancing, classical minuets and a general joie de vivre mixed with a little spirituality. Dreaming is a romantic getting to know you scene between guitar and orchestra, with slow harmonic progressions in the strings and melodic imitations and dialogues between guitar and woodwind and then also between guitar and harp. A simple waltz follows, in which the flutes take up new melodies and the guitar initially just provides accompaniment but joins in the conversation as the movement progresses. The Sanctus and Benedictus section reflects the rhythms of the Latin words of the mass, with the Osanna after each main part being a little faster and reminsicent of some of the lute works of Vincenzo Galilei. The harmonic ideas of the Sanctus also colour the slower parts of the last movement, Distant Storm, but the main part of this final movement is a rhythmically exciting dialogue between the various sections of the orchestra and the guitar, leading to an abrupt conclusion, possibly the first thunderclap of a distant but approaching storm, or possibly just a bit of fun. The work begins as a Blues, with its familiar twelve-measure form and phrasing, but rapidly moves into a musical fantasy based on five-tone and modal scales heard in jazz. The music continues to travel through a variety of moods, colors, and textures. Ideas return and are transformed. The closing section of Blue Wizard possesses a dancing quality, with a final push to the end. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an interpretive painting Blue Wizard, painted by the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. Digital My idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue 'Now is the winter of our discontent', and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s. Ten years later it took a more concrete form, when Julian Bream suggested to me that I should write a substanial new guitar work for him. More time went by, and only having finished 'We Come to the River' could I begin to realise our plan. Then began a collaboration with the instrumentalist that went through various phases, from which I gained a more profound knowledge of the technicalities and of the sound-world of the guitar. I would even go so far as to say that this collaboration gave me a new concept of how to write for an instrument with a rich tradition. The guitar is a 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable' instrument, with many limitations but also many unexplored spaces and depths within these limits. It possesses a richness of sound capable of embracing everything one might find in a gigantic contemporary orchestra. but one has to start from silence in order to notice this: one has to pause, and completely exclude noise.
The dramatis personae of this piece enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were curtain. Through masks, voices and gestures, they speak to us of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy: strange events in people's lives. Into this, the whispering voices of spirits are mingled. The epilogue is spoken by Oberon, pacified and reconciled, as though Nature had been subjected to Man.
- Hans Werner Henze.
