The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39 was completed in September of 1992. It was commissioned by James Galway, and is dedicated to him. The work is scored for an orchestra comprised of piccolo, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, percussion, harp, piano and strings. The Concerto is in three movements. The first movement, Moderato, is an arc-like form, all of whose components are in fact variations on the harmonic progression of its principal theme. The central section of this movement is a set of explicit chaconne variations on a chorale-version of this progression. The second movement, Adagio molto, presents a lyrical melody which is spun out over a pulsating syncopated ostinato which persists through the entire length of the movement. The final movement, Presto, is a virtuoso work-out for the flutist in a rondo-like form which closes with a Prestissimo coda. The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra has been recorded for release on the BMG label by James Galway with the London Mozart Players conducted by the composer. The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39 was completed in September of 1992. One of MacMillan's earliest successes was his first percussion concerto, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (1992), firmly established with hundreds of performances to date. Percussion Concerto no 2 was therefore received with great excitement at its premiere in 2014 by Colin Currie and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Like its predecessor, the second concerto is formed in a single, c25-minute span, albeit with contrasting sections, but with full orchestra scoring. The significant array of solo percussion is complemented by two orchestral percussion sections; notably the soloist makes use of a recently invented instrument, the aluphone. This edition doesn't include the solo part as a single edition.

Commi ssioned by Marta Ptaszynska for the 1992 Bydgoszcz Percussion Symposium in Poland, Dorff’s concerto bears a secret program reflecting the proud strength of Polish Solidarnosc standing up to Soviet oppression. Lurking in the drama’s background were the ironies of Poland’s financial dependence on the USSR, and Dorff’s ancestry with Russian and Polish roots. The first movement was completed in August 1991, and an hour later Gorbachev was deposed by a coup; the remainder of the concerto was composed as the USSR fell. This glorious development for human freedom also meant the end of financial commitments from the USSR to its satellite countries, leading to the cancellation of the Bydgoszcz Festival. Percussionist Dean Witten premiered the work with the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony, conducted by Maestro Alan Gilbert, then in his 20s.
