MAYKA (Serbian for “mother”) is a fascinating collection of 10 short recital pieces, each inspired by Serbian folk-music traditions, enriched through a broad variety of non-traditional techniques. Serbian-born flutist Jovana Damnjanović created these teaching etudes in conjunction with her doctoral thesis introducing Eastern European traditions to Western flutists. Along with its 10 fresh and dazzling concert works, this publication includes a thorough preface on performance techniques and instructions for each etude.MAYKA attempts to represent the sounds of traditional Serbian music and also make them more familiar and accessible to flute players around the world. The overarching inspiration for the sound is one of the most popular instruments in Serbian traditional music: the frula. Inspirations from the tone colors of other instruments such as duduk, cevara, dvojnice, and kaval are also present. An imitation of one of the Serbian traditional song forms can be found in “Čоček;” irregular time signatures can be found in “Igra,” “Čоček,” and “Vez.” The style is mostly present through trills, ornaments, and tonality, which are ubiquitous characteristics of Serbian traditional music.Each of the concert etudes has a narrative. The reason for narrative is to bring the style closer to the performer, and to help with understanding each etude’s expressive significance. Some etudes were inspired by people and events, some by specific dances, music, and literature from Serbia. As the etudes are of programmatic nature, they are a great choice for themed recitals. The idea was to write pieces short enough to be good program-fillers, not too hard to put together yet effective, and also suitable for short performances in venues that do not have a piano. The three movements that make up Nocturnes, Book I are programmatic pieces that take as their points of departure a painting, the rhythms of a great city, and a poem. 1. The Starry Night is a written down improvisation based on Vincent van Goghs famous picture of the same name. The tonal material is a quite literal transformation of the visual elements of the painting: the melismatic cadenzas mirror van Goghs swirling starlight, and the powerful chords were suggested by the sinister trees that shoot upward to puncture the skys patterns. 2. Stovers Rag is a product of the ragtime revival of the early 1970s, when many composers tried their hand at writing concert rags. The New York night, which was not without its sinister element in those days, is expressed in an updating of the classic ragtime format. The piece looks backward as well, with the old French Baroque basse de trompette making an appearance in the trio section. 3. The Song of Shadows taps the nostalgic mood typical of the poetry of Walter de la Mare. The poem of the same name pictures a lone musician on a winter night, an dog sleeping before a sinking fire, and, at the end, the spirits that are summoned by music. The opening melody, played on an 8 flute with tremulant, suggests the blues-tinged sound of an alto saxophone, and throughout the movement the organs capacity for sustained tone is used to suggest and atmosphere of dreamy timelessness. The pieces were written in 1971 and first performed on July 2, 1972 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, with the composer at the console.

This publication is a completely revised edition of our five-volume guitar tutor. In the decades since its first edition, the musical interests of students and their practice possibilities have changed. To adapt to this, we have partly expanded and partly reduced the musical and technical material of the tutor. We have increased the number of recital pieces at all levels of difficulty,so that students can spend longer on a varied repertoire at their respective level. We have determined the works in the volume V which demand a more developed technique and musicality to extend the repertoire of those who wish to study further. The transcription of lute works has sometimes made significant compromises necessary. However, in our view, it is a significant gain that students can get to know a Dowland fantasy or an early English Baroque set of variations. This volume comprises 44 concert pieces from the early 17th to the 20th centuries, 18 advanced-level studies by Carcassi, Coste, Giuliani, and Sor, as well as several advanced-level technical exercises. Besides original works by Giuliani, Sor, Tarrega, and others, it features several transcriptions of works by Dowland, Rameau, J. S. Bach, and D. Scarlatti.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed.
