The present volume contains four works for choir and orchestra that were composed and premiered at the turn of the 20th century. The works in the volume are arranged according to their opus numbers, though this does not fully reflect their chronology: Impromptu (Op. 19) for female choir and orchestra, composed and premiered in 1902; Sandels (Op. 28) for male choir and orchestra, composed in 1898 and premiered in 1900; Snofrid (Op. 29) for reciter, mixed choir, and orchestra, composed and premiered in 1900; and Islossningen i Ulea alv (Op. 30) for reciter, male choir, and orchestra, composed and premiered in 1899. Sibelius planned to revise all four works, but he only revised Impromptu in 1910 and Sandels in 1915. Both versions of these two works appear in the volume. All four works are settings of poems by Swedish-speaking authors, namely Viktor Rydberg (1828-1895), Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877) and Zacharias Topelius (1818-1898). Thorough introductions for all the works are include along with some facsimile pages. One might hope that the availability of the critical edition would encoure performances of these fine, neglected works. The music deserves to be heard more often. Between 1834 and 1847 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed a total of 28 songs for mixed voices, i.e. for two female (soprano and alto) and two male (tenor and bass) voices each. The pieces are arranged so that they can be sung by four individual singers as well as by smaller ensembles or large choirs. The composer had almost two-thirds of these works published by Breitkopf and Hartel in the collections opp. 41, 48 and 59, combining partly already existing and partly newly composed songs into a loose cycle of six songs each. The purpose of such occasional music was clear to him: ... the most natural music of all is when four people go for a walk together, in the forest, or on a boat, and then immediately carry the music with them and in them. The present volume contains all the songs published and unpublished during his lifetime, as well as their versions, which owe their various performance contexts.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy lived in the heyday of men's choruses. Early on, the composer had encountered the genre by way of his teacher Carl Friedrich Zelter and his Berlin Liedertafel, founded in 1809, had then gathered his own experience from the Leipzig Liedertafel societies, and was in contact with a number of male choral societies throughout his lifetime. Nevertheless, his relation to male choral singing was characterised not only by his inclination, but also by critical distance. The festive compositions for male chorus and orchestra forming the content of this volume are all commissioned works, two of which, the so-called Gutenberg-Kantate and the Festgesang an die Kunstler on a text by Friedrich Schiller, also appeared in print during Mendelssohn's lifetime.

Works for male chorus or mens voices a cappella run through Mendelssohns oeuvre like a fine red thread. The four choral settings in this edition from Jean Sibelius's Op. 18, in the original six settings for male choir, were arranged for mixed choir by Sibelius himself. While Sortunut aani Op. 18,1 and Saarella palaa Op. 18,4 were first published in this version in a choral collection in 1898, Venematka Op. 18,3 was only arranged by Sibelius in 1904 for a summer class and Sydameni laulu Op. 18,6 another ten years later as a reaction to an unauthorized arrangement. In the long and changeful history of the collection Op. 18, its contents were extended, revised and repositioned many times. In 1896, Sibelius wrote Hymn (Op. 21), also known by its initial words Natus in curas, for the unveiling of the sepulchral monument of Josef Pippingskold (1825-1892), professor of obstetrics at the Imperial Alexander University in Finland (presently the University of Helsinki). The Latin text for Hymn was written for the occasion by Fridolf Gustafsson (1853-1924), professor of Roman literature at the University. Sibelius worked as acting music teacher at the University at the time, and as part of his duties at the ceremony he conducted a small ensemble consisting of singers from the male choirs Akademiska Sangforeningen and Muntra Musikanter. According to the report in Hufvudstadsbladet on the following day, the simple unveiling ceremony was given a particularly impressive ending by a hymn composed for the ceremony by Jean Sibelius in an old Italian style. The work was included in a choral collection published in 1899, for which Sibelius made small revisions, mostly by interchanging the inner-voices in some passages and reworking the ending by extending the last phrase. This version was published in the Complete Edition on which the current practical edition is based.

The hymn from the tone poem Finlandia op. 26 for orchestra, one of the best-known works of Jean Sibelius, became the unofficial national anthem of Finland with the text of Veikko Antero Koskenniemi (1906-1962). In a time of great insecurity after the attack of the Soviet Union in 1939, Koskenniemi managed to capture the rising national consciousness and the hope of the Finns for an imminent solution of the conflict. Sibelius had already written an arrangement of the hymn for male choir on a different text in 1938, but after a suggestion by his publisher Roger Lindberg, he decided to write a version for mixed choir, too, on the by now better known text by Koskenniemi. This version in F major was published in 1949, but at Breitkopf & Hartel only with a German translation by Hellmuth von Hase. The Finlandia-Hymn with the Finnish text by Koskenniemi is therefore now available at Breitkopf & Hartel for the first time, as Urtext of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works. The edition includes both the version in F major as well as a second version in A flat major, written by Sibelius himself, too, but until now unpublished outside of the complete edition.

The Sonata op. 12 is the largest of Sibeliuss piano works. Sibelius may have composed it in the summer of 1893. The second movement comes from a work originally planned for male choir to a text from the Finnisch national epic Kalevala. Something of its character my still have shaped the final outcome, with its restless opening bars, sparkling writing in the pianos high register, the calming homophonic passages, and soothing arpeggio writing. The first public performance took place on April 17, 1895, in the Solennity Hall of Helsinki University. The first edition was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1906.
