Par BRITTEN BENJAMIN. Britten's Chorale is a setting of a French carol dating probably from the 17th century, entitled Romancero, although more commonly known as Picardy. The text is by W.H. This beautiful arrangement begins with a festive opening following which the chorale melody is introduced. A lofty intermezzo follows, after which the chorale returns with the joyful atmosphere of the opening. The work concludes with a splendid climax that creates a true Christmas mood for both musicians and audience. Mit diesem Arrangement des ursprünglich französischen Weihnachtsliedes Engel auf den Feldern singen hat Roland Kernen wieder einmal ein bezauberndes Konzertstück geschaffen. Das Werk beginnt mit einer festlichen Eröffnung, dann folgt der Choral, in den ein erhabenes Intermezzo eingebettet ist und wird schließlich durch einen glänzenden Höhepunkt abgeschlossen. Ein Garant für ein erfolgreiches Weihnachtskonzert!

These Carol-Preludes were written in 2008, but the idea was in the composer's mind for many years before this. Essentially, they revive the old style of the Chorale- Prelude, but using carol tunes instead of hymns or chorales. They are derived from German, French and English melodies - some of the German tunes were found in my mother's old school songbook from her schooldays in Germany after the First World War.
