Lajos Bárdos (1899-1986), composer, musicologist, teacher, and choral conductor, laid down, together with Kodály, the foundations of 20th-century Hungarian choral music. Through his work as a conductor, he raised the standards of Hungarian choral singing to an international level in a few decades. His compositions were directed towards cultivating Hungarian choral life: they draw on Renaissance polyphony and Hungarian folk music, following Kodály and Bartók. His works, which are models of choral writing, deal sensitively with Hungarian prosody and radiate an inner harmony and vigor. A selection of his most popular choral works has been published with English texts by Gail Needleman in five volumes. Contents: 1. Márkus Miklós dr.: Campfire Song 2. Kerényi György dr.: Golden-Winged Angel 3. Dienes Valéria Dr.: Christmas Lullaby 4. Czikéné Lovich Ilona: Holy Christmas Night 5. Hey, Daddy Longlegs.

The chant-like treatment of the Psalm verses, in addition to creating a simply lovely setting, can also be a great exercise in sensitively conveying the meaning of the words through proper textual stress—a skill that can be applied to less lyrical pieces in the choral repertoire. The voice parts are minimal in scope (each roughly an octave), but the fluctuating accidentals will require some attention for tuning.

The Choral Collection Psalms contains over 50 settings for mixed unaccompanied choir from six centuries. It is a true treasure-trove of compositions in various styles and levels of difficulty: with some unknown new discoveries and some classics of the choral literature, the selection will enrich both worship and concerts. The 150 psalms of the Old Testament express rejoicing, joy, confidence, but also lament, grief, anger, and even doubt. The psalms are present throughout Christianity and Judaism to this day, and are sung worldwide in countless settings. The Choral Collection Psalms displays the whole stylistic and linguistic variety ranging from contemplative, simple Anglican chant through Russian Orthodox homophony to virtuoso motets with jazzy echoes. The linguistic spectrum is equally broad: English, French, German (some with added singable English translation), Estonian, Icelandic and, of course, Latin psalm settings are represented, as well as works in Church Slavonic and Hebrew (both accompanied by transliterations and a singable German text). The foreword (German / English) offers many hints regarding the performance of the psalm settings, and a detailed index will help with choosing appropriate pieces for the liturgical occasion according to the Anglican, Protestant, or Catholic calendar. Over the last ten years editor Stefan Schuck has performed two psalm compositions every week in his NoonSong series in Berlin. From the resulting 800 works, he has selected the most interesting compositions arranged according to level of difficulty. The choral director's volume includes a CD with recordings of selected works, sung by sirventes and conducted by the editor, which will help with learning and rehearsing the repertoire. over 50 psalm settings from six centuries for worship and concert use stylistic variety and mixed levels of difficulty: from Anglican Chant to virtuoso motets for four-part mixed choir, some with organ/piano accompaniment transliterations and German singing texts help with practising cross-cultural repertoire liturgical classification of all settings for Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican lectionary includes many unknown jewels such as Boze, Boze moj (Cesar Cui), Jauschew be seser eljaun (David Rubin), and Schubert's setting of Psalm 23 in the first Hebrew version CD recording (sirventes berlin, cond. This Missa Brevis from 1877 was dedicated to the Congrégation des Dames auxiliatrices de l’Immaculée Conception. Founded in 1858, by 1880 the order’s mother house in Paris had 72 members, and maintained an orphanage for 90 children and a 30-bed hospital. This Missa Brevis would have made a fine, practical setting for the sisters to sing at High Mass, and perhaps for the orphans to sing as well. The movements are just the right length to work well during the liturgy, and simple enough to learn quickly and remember easily. Although very easy, they carry their text well, and benefit from careful dynamic shaping by experienced choirs. individual movements may also be sung as free-standing church anthems, or as concert pieces. We are happy to provide the entire Mass in octavo form, or to negotiate print licenses for individual movements. The composition for eleven homogeneous choirs was written between 1989 and 2005. These pieces, easy to sing but written in the present-day musical idiom, can be performed by either children?s or female choirs. All the eleven pieces are short, 2-3 minutes in duration, forming a unified composition, but it is important that the varying characters, which reflect the text, should always be recognizable. The pieces may be sung separately or in any desired grouping.

Vol. 84 — J.S. BACH: 436 Two-Part Chorales — Essential Studies in Counterpoint, Musicianship & Sight-Reading (169 pages). This premium Urtext edition presents Bach’s 436 four-part chorales with the inner voices (alto and tenor) removed, which is equal in difficulty to the Grades 3-4 lines in BachScholar’s bestselling Sight-Reading & Harmony. These simple yet profoundly beautiful 436 chorales serve as excellent preparation for the reading and playing of pieces featuring 1:1 and 1:2 counterpoint, such as two-part Inventions and fugues, and make Bach’s chorales accessible to less advanced students who are unable to play all four parts. Performers will marvel at the clear and easy to read manuscript and will be delighted in having no page turns between chorales. The 436 chorales are arranged in alphabetical order (in German) according to each chorale melody (hymn tune), which are accompanied with English translations. This edition also includes a 15-page table of contents with background information of each chorale, a list of the chorales in BWV order for easy reference, and an alphabetical list of composers of the chorale melodies. Ideal for piano and organ teachers and students as well as college and university courses in ear training, sight-reading, harmony, theory, and counterpoint. Published by: BachScholar.

Enlightenin gSiegfried Thiele's Three Chants are short, easy-to-learn yet harmonically intriguing pieces for three equal voices. They are thus suitable for small ensembles as well as female and male choirs if the violin clef is read an octave lower. In here, Thiele uses short poems by the Silesian mystic and theologian Angelus Silesius (1624-1677) whose epigrams belong to the most important lyrical works of Baroque literature. His works have been regularly set to choral music in recent times, for instance by Johann Nepomuk David (Three Settings from Cherubinischer Wandersmann, CHB 4810, and Mensch werde wesentlich, CHB 2856, both for male choir).

Robinson' s TBB arrangement of this beloved Bennett madrigal, originally published for four voices in 1599, has been changed from the original key of A minor to the key of D minor, making the ranges and texture more characteristic for TBB voices. A wonderful concert or festival staple piece!.Weep, O Mine Eyes is a classic madrigal from the Renaissance period (circa 1400-1650). Although John Bennet's exact birth and death dates are unknown, we know that he was English and composed madrigals (non-sacred a cappella pieces) in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. Although, Bennet was not as prolific as other madrigal writers of the time, such as Thomas Morley, Weep, O Mine Eyes has certainly stood the test of time. Originally published in a book of 17 madrigals for four voices in 1599, this arrangement for TBB voices has been changed from the original key of A minor to the key of D minor, making the ranges and texture more characteristic for TBB voices. The original flavor of Bennet's four-part setting has been preserved, including the counterpoint (independent voices) where each voice is of equal importance. In Renaissance style no parts should over sing; the beauty of the melodic lines and text should come through and over singing will take away from the beauty. The EE vowel is sometimes problematic in the word weep. I suggest that you produce the EE vowel with OO on the lips and EE inside the mouth for better blend and to avoid a horizontal spreading of the vowel.
