Bach's first cantata for the election of the Leipzig town council, composed in August 1723, is one of his most splendidly scored work from his Leipzig period. The choice of opening, with the representative form of a French overture, was suited to a festive orchestral scoring. Two choral movements frame a middle section which consists of two arias and a recitativo accompagnato with a trumpet ritornello. The conclusion of this extended festive music takes a reflective turn in movements 8 and 9, when Bach allows a recitative to be followed by simple, prayer-like chorale movement. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3111900.

Alth ough a large proportion of Buxtehude's vocal works are sacred compositions, he also composed for secular occasions. In 1680 he composed the wedding aria Klinget fur Freuden, ihr Larmen-Klarinen BuxWV 119 for the marriage of the Swedish King Charles XI to the Danish Princess Ulrika Eleonora. At the same time the Peace of Lund, concluded in 1679 marking the end of an almost five-year-long war between Denmark-Norway and Sweden, was celebrated. The five-verse wedding poem is sung by two sopranos and bass, and the basso continuo has two violins and two trumpets as accompanying instruments in the alternating instrumental ritornelli. Whilst the first and fourth verses express joy about the peace settlement between Denmark and Sweden, verses two and three are predominantly concerned with the bridal couple. Finally, in the last verse, God is asked for his blessing both for the peace settlement and for the royal couple. The later sacred parody of the work for the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, New Year's Day, as the aria Klinget mit Freuden, ihr klaren Klarinen BuxWV 65 cannot be more precisely dated. Now the trumpets proclaim to the Christian congregation about Jesus and the brightly shining light of the divine word.

Com posed in 1727 for a eulogy and funeral oration for Electress Christiane Eberhardine in the Leipzig University church, the music for the funeral ode is well-known today above all through reconstructions of Bach's St Mark Passion, in which large parts of this cantata were probably re-used, but of which only the text survives. With the funeral ode we have one of Bach's strongest and most fascinating vocal compositions. Although Gottsched's text is associated with a particular occasion, it is distinguished in its literary quality from many secular cantatas and it is entirely appropriate to perform this impressive cantata in concerts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3119800.

Uncond itional Love is Howard Goodall’s heartfelt cantata of gratitude and remembrance, a poignant reflection upon the COVID-19 crisis. It seeks both to give thanks to those who sacrificed their lives in the aid of others and to offer solace to the grieving. Yet unifying each of its seven movements is a call to hope and to moving forward in a world rebuilt. The cantata commemorates the selflessness and togetherness felt by communities across the world during the pandemic, communities that offer their thanksgiving in many different ways. It is hoped that Unconditional Love’s universal messages will resonate with choirs of all kinds and in all places, for many years to come.

The cantata Sie werden euch in den Bann tun [They will banish you] BWV 183 for Exaudi Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The cantata opens with Jesus's words from the Sunday gospel reading in an accompagnato recitative for bass - representing the vox Christi - accompanied by four oboes which, together with the strings, are also deployed in the cantata's second accompagnato recitative. The first of the virtuoso arias is accompanied by violoncello piccolo, the second by two oboes da caccia together with the string ensemble. The cantata concludes with an unusually animated final chorale. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3118300.

Great opera in only 10 minutes! An impressive early work by Puccini is finally available as sheet music: The composer wrote the cantata I figli d’Italia bella in 1877 for a competition held by the province of Lucca. The text is a paean to Italy’s brilliant artistic tradition, remembered through the country’s great artists. The cantata has a rather eventful history: Considered lost for many years, a set of parts turned up about 20 years ago in which, however, the vocal solo was missing. Subsequently, the cantata was only performed with a reconstructed solo part. Then in 2019, an anonymous and previously unattributed manuscript was identified as an autograph of Puccini. It became clear that this was the missing complete score! Now we can hear how the composer captured the text in thrilling style with solo tenor, choir and large orchestra to create a vibrant work brimming with youthful sparkle and energy. The cantata perfectly complements Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (Carus 56.001), another early work by the composer that here and there shows some operatic tendencies. The cantata will also appear in Volume III/1 (Compositions for voices and instruments) of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini.- Newly discovered Puccini autography- Grand opera on a miniature scale

Immediately following his first opera Rheinberger composed a small dramatic cantata for children's voices in 1863. It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark, arranged as a rhymed libretto with various roles by Franz Bonn (1830-1854). Among the highpoints of the cantata are a scene of awakening fashioned as a choral recitative with an expressive piano part and a large final chorus Preist laut den Herr. Both of these helped to make the cantata very popular in Rheinberger's days with boys' and girls' choirs. Rheinberger later arranged it with an accompaniment by a small orchestra.
