The third volume moves students toward more advanced playing techniques and literature. This text continues to develop playing skills found in Book 2 and advances the student through more rigorous and lengthy literature. Instrument-specific selections promote performance, reinforcing shifting skills, more advanced bowing techniques, and complex and multiple-meter pieces. The book contains solo literature that: enables the student to use higher positions with suggested fingerings; features accidentals that challenge left-hand intonation; utilizes more complex time signatures, multiple-meters, and challenging rhythmic patterns; and develops the bow stroke to perform more expressive dynamics and musicianship. Digital audio available.

The nine pieces in this second volume of the “Viola Recital Album†augment those appearing in volume 2 of the viola tutor. There the pieces are integrated in ascending order of difficulty, whereas the additional pieces in the “Recital Album†can be handled more freely and inserted at any point for the sake of variety. The volume contains such pieces as Carrie Williams Krogmann's “Rotkehlchens Nachtgesang†(“Robin's nocturneâ€) or Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's “Russisches Lied ohne Worte†(“Russian song without wordsâ€).Eac h piece is accompanied by duo version in which the teacher or an advanced learner can play the second part. There is also a piano part that can be played by the teacher or parents. All the pieces in the four “Viola Recital Albums†represent welcome additions to the already varied repertoire of Egon Sassmannhaus's viola tutor “Early Start on the Violaâ€.Kurt Sassmannshaus is the editor of many string editions in the Bärenreiter catalogue. He continues in the tradition of “Early Start on String Instruments†founded by his father, Egon Sassmannshaus. The new editions mentioned here were developed by Kurt Sassmannshaus in conjunction with his wife Melissa Lusk and his son Christoph Sassmannshaus.

Each of these four-movement works is a real jewel. Mozart worked hard on these six string quartets, and dedicated them to none other than the “inventor†of the genre himself: Joseph Haydn. They were first published in 1785, and have since then been reprinted innumerable times. Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the editor of this new Henle Urtext edition, already penned the Critical Report for these Haydn Quartets in the New Mozart Edition, 25 years ago. He is now presenting this core repertoire in an edition of its own. This Urtext edition clarifies numerous inaccuracies in other editions, especially with regard to dynamics and articulation, and even corrects a few wrong notes that had gone unnoticed up to now. Special attention has here been paid to making the music as easy-to-read as possible, with ideally placed page turns.

Transcribed and arranged for Piano by Lawrence RosenA new, 3-volume set of Mozart Dances for Piano, 14 of these dance suites are faithfully transcribed for piano at the early to advanced intermediate level. Almost all appear as new Mozart music for piano (except for the Six German Dances, K. 509, which Mozart himself arranged for piano.) Within each volume, they are arranged by increasing difficulty. They are eminently suited for teaching, recital and concert performance, encores, recording, sight-reading practice, and theoretical study.
