The Dave Brubeck Quartet's 1959 album Time Out changed the sound of jazz and American music. Brubeck's experimentation with meter, harmony and even Turkish rhythms eventually earned him the cover of Time Magazine- the first jazz musician to achieve such a feat. Saxophonist Paul Desmond's composition 'Take Five' went on to become the first million-selling jazz instrumental single on the Billboard Hot 100. This folio celebrates the album's 50th anniversary with full-color artwork from the original record, and a 10 page write-up from jazz historian Ted Gioia. The American jazz legend Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) was equally distinguished as composer and pianist. Studies at the College of the Pacific and with Darius Milhaud at Mills College led to the founding with fellow students of the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. Later in 1958 the combination of Brubeck with drummer Joe Morello double bassist Eugene Wright and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet's experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and TakeFive introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz.This folio contains several of his most popular works arranged for Piano Voice and Guitar.

The seven pieces in this volume are excerpted from two ballet suites composed by Dave Brubeck. Struttin' and Doing the Charleston are from the four-movement set Glances. Also included are five selections from Points on Jazz: Prelude * Scherzo * Rag * Waltz * A la Turk. Brubeck himself describes Glances as my most Milhaud-inspired work, a tribute to the French composer with whom Dave studied composition. Points on Jazz was commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre and the cover of this incredible collection features Dave at the piano surrounded by the dancers.
