Masterpiece Edition-Franz Schubert was born in Vienna in 1797. He was involved in music at an early age learning music theory and many different instruments including piano violin organ and voice. During his brief but prolific life he wrote a wide variety of music. His compositions included symphonies piano sonatas piano duets operas masses chamber works and several hundred songs. Among the hundreds of songs the most loved and revered is Ave Maria. Ave Maria was first published in 1826 under the German title Ellen's Gesang 111: Hymne and die Jungfrau (Ellen's Song 111: Hymn to the Virgin). The text used was taken from a novel written by Sir Walter Scott entitled 'Lady of the Lake'. It was then translated into German as it appeared in Schubert's song. After Schubert's death in 1828 the Latin text began being used and eventually surpassed either the use of the German or English text. 'Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin' is a text which has been used in religious contexts since the beginning of Christianity. This vocal classic was originally envisioned as a devotional piece but over time the magnificent beauty of both music and text has made this song equally popular for secular performances. Schubert's Ave Maria arranged for High Voice is recommended for Soprano or Tenor ranges. We have included a separate vocal line with lyrics written in Latin just above the piano accompaniment stave(s). The English translation is also included to explain this fabled story. D. 946-These three little known pieces are often referred to in catalogues as the Drei Klavierstücke which Schubert apparently intended to be part of another group of Impromptus. Whilst all are lively and bright they contrast sharply and deserve to be placed amongst Schubert's finest works.

Rosemary Brown (1916 - 2001) was a medium who sensationally claimed that dead composers were dictating new musical works to her. She created a small media sensation in the 1970s by claiming to produce works dictated to her by Franz Liszt Johannes Brahms Johann Sebastian Bach Rachmaninov Franz Schubert Edvard Grieg Claude Debussy Chopin Schumann and Ludwig Beethoven. The opinions of musical critics were varied on the merit of Rosemary's transcriptions but most agreed that in their style they bore a great resemblance to the composers' published works.Opinion is still divided about her claims and although there is scepticism many musicians of note such asRichard Rodney Bennett who said A lot of people can improvise but you couldn't fake music like this without years of training. I couldn't have faked some of the Beethoven myself have shown great interest.In 1969 she was put to a test by the British Broadcasting Corporation who set her at a piano where she waited for the spirit of Liszt to contact her. In due course she produced a piece that she said had been dictated to her by the dead composer. It proved too hard for her to play so another pianist was engaged to play it. The piece was subsequently studied by a Liszt expert who said it had definite similarities to Liszt's work.

Franz Schubert's Impromptus Op. post 142 (D 935) are among his most frequently played piano works and have found a permanent place in music lessons and in the concert repertoire. The Wiener Urtext Edition now presents a new edition covering the latest musicological research. Closely following Schubert's original manuscript, numerous details have been added to and corrected in the text. This edition now also includes notes on interpretation by Robert D.
