The Sonata No. 9 from 1947 is Prokofiev's last originally composed and completed piano work. It was premiered by the leading Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter. The four movements in a cyclical connection are only faintly reminiscent of the consistent characteristics of the three so-called War Sonatas Nos. 6-8. The character of this almost unknown sonata fluctuates between 'balanced' and 'uniform'. The work is suitable for intermediate and advanced pianists.

The three so-called War Sonatas Nos. 6-8 were composed in the years 1939-1944, while Prokofiev was evacuated from Moscow to Kazakhstan and the Caucasus. The reference to the siege of Leningrad was a prerequisite for the success of the compositions, which continue the tradition of Beethoven rather than conforming to the stylistic maxims of 'socialist realism' in force at the time.The Sonata No. 8 is more introverted than its well-known predecessor Sonata No. 7 and impresses in the final movement with its diversity and echoes of French Impressionism. Composer's Note YTA is Swedish for 'surface'; my series of three YTA's - YTA 1 (alto flute), YTA 2 (Piano), YTA 3 (Cello)- were written with particular performers/friends in mind, and in each piece I have tried to capture and explore aspects of their virtuosity and that of their instrument. Being a Finn, 'surfaces' are often snowy and icy, and the music reflects a sparkling, crystalline and sometimes blinding quality, just as a vibrating, shimmering surface reflects a shing light. Although the surface of the music is extremely busy and dispenses with traditional medlody altogether, the formal process is considerably slower and partly hidden behind the frenetic stream and gleam of fast gestures.
