Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.â€.

(The Twinkling of an Eye), op.128 (1995). Five settings for high voice and piano of poems by Solveig von Schoultz (Swedish text). Each of the texts portrays a specific moment or state of mind: selfishness, love, passion, or inner meditation. The fourth song is more abstract, a song without words the heading of which is A bird cast a passing shadow on the Buddha's dream, a line from the poem Anuradhapura. The last song, Second, epitomises the title of the whole cycle, the twinkling of an eye!
