Bach: Concerto for
Harpsichord in D minor
BWV 1052a: Clavecin Et Instruments A Cordes Barenreiter

Based on Johann Sebastian Bach. First edition-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). When Johann Sebastian Bach created his six-part corpus of harpsichord concertos in 1738 (BWV 1052-1057) he gave pride of place to the Concerto in D minor BWV 1052. It has long been thought for good reasons that this piece was based on a lost violin concerto in the same key that he had already transcribed on twoprevious occasions. The second 'forerunner' of BWV 1052 is the present harpsichord concerto. It was first published by Wilhelm Rust in volume 17 of the old Bach Society Gesamtausgabe (1869) and given the number BWV 1052a in the Schmieder catalogue. Rust felt that Johann Sebastian Bach himself wrote out the principal source a set of orchestral parts preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek under the shelf mark Mus. ms. St 350 and therefore treated the piece as an authentic early version of BWV 1052. Today however we know that the scribe was Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach who is generally also regarded as the work's author.Urtext of the New Bach EditionParts (BA5231) two-keyboard reduction (BA5231-90) and study score (TP410) format 22.5 x 16.5cm (all 6 concertos) available for sale

Cantata for the 1st Sunday after Trinity (composed for June 11 1724)-O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort BWV 20Cantata for the 1st Sunday after Trinity composed for June 11 1724Johann Sebastian Bach opened the second year of his Leipzig church compositions on 11 June 1724 with a performance of the cantata ?O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort?.The work is based on a church hymn by Johann Rist that depicts in riveting language the terrors of the Last Judgment and the torments of Hell followed by an admonition to live a life pleasing to God. The poem inspired Bach to write one of his most impressive church compositions altogether. This remarkably extensive score with twelve sheets sheds particularly instructiveand detailed light on Bach's creative process. The Bach Archive Leipzig acquired this priceless manuscript at the end of 2016 making it possible for the first time to reunite the original performance material and the handwritten score of a Bach chorale cantata. Our facsimile edition complements the edition of BWV 20 presented by James Webster almost 50 years ago in volume I/15 of the ?New Bach Edition?.- Autograph score combined with the original parts- Two facsimile fascicles in four-colour reproduction (24 + 64 pp.) each in a facsimile dustcover and one volume of commentary (German/English 16 pp.) all combined in a slipcase- Series Documenta musicologica II/52- Limited edition of 250 copies- With a Commentary by Peter Wollny (Ger/Engl)

The Flute sonata in G minor BWV 1020 one of the gems of 18th century Flute literature has been passed down to us over the years as a work of Johann Sebastian Bach but its authenticity is disputed. Recent research suggests that the composition most probably came from the pen of Bach’s oldest son Carl Philipp Emanuel. This new edition is an extract from the Bärenreiter edition BA 5220 which also includes the two Flute sonatas BWV 1033 in C major and BWV 1031 in E-flat major which are of similarly doubtful authenticity. The sonata in G minor has been edited by the renowned Bachscholar Alfred Dürr using the editorial guidelines of the New Bach Edition as a basis and it appears now for the first time as a separate performing edition.

The Parallel German-English Texts with Annotations-The major choral works by Johann Sebastian Bach-the Christmas Easter and Ascension Oratorios and the St. Matthew St. Mark and St. John Passions-stand as the most frequently-performed and penetratingly discussed of the genre. Renowned Bach scholar Michael Marissen has assembled a compact well-designed and ideally useful treatment of Bach's oratorios providing the full German texts with literal English translations and copious annotations. He provides strict literal translations of these texts with citations from the Luther Bible as it was known in Bach's day along side extensive footnotes that provide information addressing the interests and concerns of today's Bachcommunity. These are the first translations of the librettos from Bach's oratorios to accommodate the many sense-clarifying allusions to the readings of the Luther Bibles in Bach's day to explore from historical dictionaries the meanings of previously unnoticed archaic usages and to contrast relevant findings from modern biblical scholarship. Marissen's insights are particularly helpful his thoroughness is impressive and the book will be a longstanding definitive and essential reference for choral directors performers audience members and Bach scholars alike.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was the eldest surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his second wife Anna Magdalena Wulcken; he was born in Leipzig in 1732. His father gave him his first music instruction. After his initial studies in law he devoted himself entirely to music. In 1750 he entered the services of Count Wilhelm zu Buckeburg where he first of all was engaged as the Count's chamber musician (Hochgraflicher Schaumburg-Lippischer Cammer-Musicus) later as orchestral director a post which he held until his death in 1795. The 'Buckeburg Bach' is described as an amiable and devout person who was highly respected and esteemed for his 'rectitude greatness of soul readiness to oblige and kindness' (Schlichtegroll Nekrolog). He was an exceedingly industrious and gifted composer in whom one couldnot fail to recognise that the spirit of his great father had also been communicated to him' (Dulon). Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach's Sonata A Violoncello Solo Col Basso appears in print for the first time with this edition. The autograph which served as source was held at the time in the University Library at Tubingen depot of the former Prussian State Library under the call-mark Mus. ms. autogr. Bach P 382 which has subsequently been moved to the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz. For practical use the accompaniment has been realised from the unfigured Bass. - Piano reduction and separte parts for Cello and Basso continuo.

A Chorale arranged for 15 Instruments. Full Score for ensemble.Bach's Befichl du deine Wege is a chorale setting (BWV 272) which Hans Abrahamsen has arranged for fifteen instruments. In Hans Albrahamsen's adaptation Bachs chorale gradually ernerges from two melodic fragments both borrowed from the Danish composer Poul Ruders' Four Dances in One Movernent'. In fact both fragments are taken from the last three bars of Ruders' composition. One of Ruders' small melodies is descending the other is ascending. The metamorphosis from Ruders to Bach can be accomplished because both of Ruders' melodic fragments are in fact 'hidden' among the parts of this Bach choraleinasmuch as the composer has transposed it into B minor. In the first verse we hear only the descending Ruders melody. In the secend verse Ruders' second ascending and chrornatically coloured melody is added. In the subsequent verses more and more melodies are added. Thus the piece begins with Poul Ruders' melodic fragment in the foreground. In the course of the next verse Ruders' material gradually recedes into the background and permits Bachs face to ernerge with increasing clarty in the foreground. The piece is dedicated to Poul Ruders.            - Thomas MichelsenArrangement1 Flute1 Oboe1 Clarinet In Bb1 Bassoon1 Horn in F1 Trumpet in Bb1 Trombone (Tenor)1 Vibraphone (Motor Off)1 Harp1 Piano1 Violin I1 Violin II1 Viola1 Cello1 Double Bass

They reveal great stylistic variety whose forebears stem from the Northern German organ tradition. Already these early works comprising fantasias fugues fughettas and imitative techniques employing motifs from chorale melodies bear witness to Bach?s broad compositional spectrum. This newly published volume is an updated edition of Series IV/9 of the ?New Bach Edition? BWV997-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello. It may also serve as a way for cellists to get close to Bach through works other than the six solo suites and the three gamba sonatas.I first came across the Partita by Johann Sebastian Bach in a version for flute and strings beautifully recorded by Kurt Redel. Since my early teens it has been on my list of special pieces. The four movements show extraordinary variation. In the hands of Bach the key of C minor becomes particularly powerful of limitless weight sometimes even stern. Is there an opening of a movement from the baroqueera which compares with power of the first movement here? It is a magni-ficent example of musical temperament.Three 18th century manuscripts survive. One found among the papers of C.Ph.E.Bach and two by Johann Philipp Kirnberger a student of J.S.Bach. All three are in the form of a keyboard sonata. Because of the choice of register however one may ask whether they are in turn arrangements of an original composition for solo flute or solo violin. The Double is very pianistic and may therefore have been added later. For all movements except the Fugue I have supplied a piano part for the right hand.

“A mendicant woman from the Haynstrasse aged 59 years Anna Magdalena née Wilckin widow of Mr. Johann Sebastian Bach cantor at the St. Thomas School” – thus reads the entry dated 29 February 1760 in the Leipzig 'Ratsleichenbuch” (City Register of Deaths) for a woman whose name has become known throughout the world thanks to the two music books put together for her by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach himself opened the book with two of the large Partitas subsequently published in the first part of the 'Clavierübung”; the rest of the contents was determined by Anna Magdalena. Johann Sebastian Bach Volume I. This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ...(+)
Johann Sebastian Bach Volume I. This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks among the great classics of musicology. Since its first publication in 1873-80, it has remained the basic work on Bach and the foundation of later research and study. The three-part treatment describes in chronological sequence practically everything that is known of the composer's life: his ancestry, his immediate family, his associations, his employers, and the countless occasions on which his musical genius emerged. Author Philipp Spitta accompanies this biographical material with quotations from primary sources: correspondence, family records, diaries, official documents, and more. In addition to biographical data, Spitta reviews Bach's musical production, with analyses of more than 500 pieces, covering all the important works. More than 450 musical excerpts are included in the main text, and a 43-page musical supplement illustrates longer passages. Despite the scholarly nature of this work, it also has the rare distinction of being a study that can be read with considerable enjoyment and great profit by every serious music lover, with or without a substantial background in the history of music or musical theory.

Johann Sebastian Bach Volume II.
