Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for violin and harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works, like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036, date back to the years of study with his father, yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work, the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71-74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq 143-145 for violin and harpsichord, most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E. Debussy wrote his solitary Violin Sonata in the closing days of his life plagued by the distress of the ongoing Great War financial difficulties and health issues of a terminal cancer. Shortly afterits completion in April the first performance took place on May 5th 1917 with Debussy himself at the Piano. This was the composer?s last public appearance before his death in 1918.The Sonata For Violinand Piano was the third and final composition in a cycle intended to consist of six sonatas for various instruments. It has an overall atmosphere of melancholy while also capturing contradictory characteristics such asjoy and silliness presented in a form closer to a fantasia than a sonata. The three expressive movements (Allegro vivo Intermede and Finale) are written in a French nationalistic spirit withdistinctive influences from Spanish and gypsy music throughout. This ambiguousness and ambivalence in form sound and character all attribute to Debussy?s innovative language of ?musical impressionism? which has become afavourite of musicians and audiences alike.The comments at the end of this Urtext edition provide detailed information on the sources and alternative readings while the preface by François Lesure in German English andFrench gives historical and biographical context. for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication.This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven’s Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin are now available at a special set price. The set consists of volume I (BA 9014) and volume II (BA 9015). Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of Mozart’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part. Not only does Clive Brown’s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by today’s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified. One example can be found in Beethoven’s “Tempo di Minuetto” from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy based on C.P.E. Bach’s “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen” to denote a rest. This musical symbol, which was included in the first edition published during Beethoven’s lifetime, has not been addressed in any modern edition to date. Grieg?s third Violin Sonata is one of his major creations and stands alongside the sonatas of Johannes Brahms and César Franck at the pinnacle of late nineteenth century chamber music. One small measure of the work?srenown is its occurrence in Thomas Mann?s novel 'Doktor Faustus'. The sonata has been growing more popular ever since its first publication and it is now high time for it to appear in an urtext edition from Henle. A preface anddetailed editorial notes provide interesting background material on the work?s source tradition.

6 Sonatas for Piano and Violin op. 10 (b)-Weber composed an incredible array of compositions in his rather short but at the same time tireless life. Many of them have still to be discovered. The Six Violin Sonatas op. 10 (b) composed inDarmstadt in 1810 are most certainly amongst them. The individual movements are rather short and also not particularly difficult technically. The music is on the other hand all the more compelling which is partly due to thevarious integrated dance forms: ?Carattere Espagnuolo? and ?Air Polonais? in Sonata No. 2 ?Air Russe? in No. 3 ?Siciliano? in No. 5 and a ?Polacca? in No. 6.
