The first and foremost edition of these ever popular studies which are to be found in almost every syllabus where the guitar is taught. Selected by the Examination Board of the Royal Schools of Music London 2009. This new expanded and revised edition is the only publication to reconcile the early sources of these Etudes with present day playing techniques. Several earlier editions from the 19th and 20th centuries were consulted for its preparation. The main music text is beautifully engraved with a clear and uncluttered presentation of the Etudes. This edition contains a useful section on 'Playing the Etudes' with over 50 music examples showing alternative fingerings etc. Adetailed Critical Commentary as well as historical archive material completes this new version of our highly popular 1985 edition. Highly recommended as it will meet the needs of all at whatever level.

Carcassi was born in Florence, Italy, and first studied the piano, but learned guitar when still a child. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso concert guitarist. He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget. From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli. Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. After a short return to performing in 1836, he quit his concert practice around 1840 and died in Paris in 1853. His most famous works are collected in his 25 Etudes op. 60. In these, he managed to blend technical skills and brilliant romantic music. This is the reason his music is still played by so many classical guitarists today.

The fingering on nearly all 'modern' editions of the Carcassi studies Op. 60, to a very large extent if not almost completely, derives originally from Llobet, who in his Rowies, Paris 1914 edition was the very first to publish RH fingering for them. Many modern editors just put their own names on what was Llobet's fingering, thus silently claiming it as their own. A process being continued even to this day. We are pleased to present a carefully restored facsimile of this edition from Llobet's library with all his fingering and emendations intact.

Laszlo Szendrey-Karper (1932-1991) was an internationally renowned guitarist, and the founder of organized guitar teaching in Hungary. He wrote an instructional methodology for the guitar, and composed studies and pieces for students. The eight books of his series Guitar Exercises and Pieces provide a variety of pieces for elementary and intermediate guitar students to play, arranged in order of difficulty. A basic source for Szendrey-Karper was Hungarian folk songs, in addition to which he transcribed for the guitar well known pieces composed for other instruments. Alongside his own pieces and etudes, he selected for the series studies and concert pieces by other composers (including Ferdinando Carulli, Matteo Carcassi, Johann Krieger, Henry Purcell, and Laszlo Borsody).
