Chandons Te Deum HWV 281. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. Handel composed the 'Te Deum” in B-flat major HWV 281 in 1718 for the future Duke of Chandos, hence its nickname 'Chandos Te Deum”. Here it is called 'Te Deum for Cannons” after the Duke's stately home named Cannons where the first performance took place. The unusual scoring for flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, two violins and basso continuo plus a choir (one soprano, three tenors and a bass) probably reflects the musicians which were available at Cannons, bearing in mind that three tenors were used also in 'Acis and Galatea”, the masque which was composed at almost the same time. Though in many respects this 'Te Deum” is reminiscent of the 'Utrecht Te Deum”, its smaller forces tend to give it more the character of chamber music. Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum (HWV 278) received its first performance in St Paul’s Cathedral on 7 July 1713 during the celebrations for the Treaty of Utrecht. It is among his first compositions for the Anglican Church and accordingly he set the words of the Te Deum an ancient ecclesiastical hymn of obscure origins in English translation (‘We praise thee O God’). The score though richly orchestrated as befitted the occasion dispenses with timpani which like the harpsichord were probably omitted from the première owing to shortage of space. - Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition - Full score and performance material(BA4246) and vocal score (BA424690) available for sale

This work written for AAB soli SATB chorus and orchestra was first performed at the thanksgiving for the Treaty of Utrecht held in St Paul's Cathedral London on 7th July 1713. Together with Te Deum it was quickly established in standard use on such occasions as the Festivals of the Sons of the Clergy.This vocal score edited by Watkins Shaw includes an organ arrangement of Handel's instrumental score.
