Handel composed his only oratorio in German between 1716 and 1717 basing it on the then popular Passion text by Barthold Heinrich Brockes entitledDer fur die Sunde der Welt gemarterte und sterbende Jesus(The Story of Jesus, Suffering and Dying for the Sins of the World). Handel's affinity to opera is evident in the musical realisation of the emphatic text as he creates a synthesis between traditional Protestant church music and the depiction of human passion in the manner of opera seria. This edition is based on the corresponding volume of theHalle Handel Edition(BA 4021). The full score, parts and vocal score have been newly engraved. The piano reduction has been simplified and brought up to today's standards, thus making it much more manageable to play.

The Christmas Choirbook is a collection of up-to-date, colorful arrangements of 22 Christmas songs from throughout the world. Among classics, dressed in new harmonic sounds, you will enjoy jazz and pop intonations, as well as gospel renditions of Go Tell It and Joyful. The skandinavien Christmas songs are particularly special: contemplative and musical, even droll as in the story about the Christmas troll in the finnish Tomtarnass Julnatt. The Christmas Choirbook offers many stylistic choices for the Christmas and Advent season choir music, so let the available CD (ED9896-50) inspire you in the joyful singing of these pieces. Of course the recordings, meant only as a first and hopefully appealing impression, represent only a few of the many possible interpretations you will bring to the arrangements. Full verses were intentionally not recorded, although we did overlay simple instrumental accompaniments to the a cappella movements. In addition, the CD includes pure choire versions as well as some sing-a-longs, i.e. instrumental tracks for you to use as half-playback.

The four choral settings in this edition from Jean Sibelius's Op. 18, in the original six settings for male choir, were arranged for mixed choir by Sibelius himself. While Sortunut aani Op. 18,1 and Saarella palaa Op. 18,4 were first published in this version in a choral collection in 1898, Venematka Op. 18,3 was only arranged by Sibelius in 1904 for a summer class and Sydameni laulu Op. 18,6 another ten years later as a reaction to an unauthorized arrangement. In the long and changeful history of the collection Op. 18, its contents were extended, revised and repositioned many times. The four current settings are all those that are also present in the final version of Op. 18 for male choir and of which there are original arrangements. The texts for Sortunut aani (The Broken Voice), Venematka (Boat Trip) and Saarella palaa (Fire on the Island) stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, while the text of Sydameni laulu (Song of My Heart) stems from the poet Aleksis Kivi, but refers to the Kalevala, too. The edition includes translations of the texts in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.

Jean Sibelius's Six Songs for Male Choir Op. 18 are published as Urtext with the original Finnish lyrics for the first time in this edition. Most of these stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, but the texts of Sydameni laulu [Song of My Heart] and Metsamiehen laulu [Song of the Woodmen] are from the poet Aleksis Kivi. The individual pieces originated over a couple of years for different choirs and occasions and were only later combined by Sibelius under a common Opus number. Venematka [Boat Trip] originated as early as 1893, Saarellaa palaa [Fire on the Island] was first performed in 1895 and Sortunut aani [The Broken Voice] in 1899. Sydameni laulu was published in the same year together with Metsamiehen laulu, while Terve kuu [Greetings to the Moon] was not composed by Sibelius until 1901. The contents of the collection Op. 18 were subsequently extended, revised and repositioned by Sibelius many times; the final shape with six settings was established in 1930. Four of these settings were also arranged for mixed choir and have already been published as an Urtext edition (ChB 5372). The edition includes translations of the lyrics in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on volume VII/2 of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.
