Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection. In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered. The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer. The movements are: Allegro - Andante - Andante Moderato - Allegro --- Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) tunnetaan lähinnä lied-sävellyksistään, joita aktiivisina sävellysvuosina syntyikin satoja. Vähemmälle huomiolle ovat jääneet hänen instrumentaalisävellyksensä, mm. kuusi pianosonaattia, sellosonaatti, sarja gamballe ja pianolle sekä muutamat pikkukappaleet. Vuodelle 1935 päivätty neliosainen, laajamuotoinen sonaatti viululle ja pianolle (op. 87) jäi keskeneräiseksi. Suomen Kansalliskirjaston Kilpinen-kokoelmassa oli useita luonnoksia ja eri versioita. Sonaatin osista neljäs oli keskeneräisin. Viulutaiteilija Frida Backman tilasi konserttiaan varten sonaatin täydennöksen säveltäjä Walter Wolffilta. Hän sai työnsä päätöksen 2018, jonka jälkeen sonaatti kantaesitettiin. Fennica Gehrmanin julkaisu on sonaatin ensipainos, ja siten laajentaa kuvaamme Yrjö Kilpisestä instrumenttiteosten säveltäjänä. Von der Existenz der sieben verschollenen Klaviersonaten Hob. XVI: 2a-e und g-h wissen wir lediglich durch die Eintragungen in den sogenannten Entwurf-Katalog, dessen Hauptteil Ende 1765 entstand. Haydn führte den Katalog bis 1777 fort, indem er von Zeit zu Zeit die jeweils neu komponierten Werke ergänzte. Entstanden sind die Sonaten vermutlich in der Zeit zwischen 1766 und 1772. Die Tatsache, dass die Sonaten verschollen sind, wird häufig mit dem Brand, dem Haydns Haus in Eisenstadt im Jahr 1768 zum Opfer fiel, in Verbindung gebracht. Der Zeitraum 1766 bis 1772 deckt sich ziemlich genau mit der häufig, jedoch nur unzureichend charakterisierend Sturm und Drang-Zeit genannten Schaffensphase des Komponisten, die den Höhepunkt einer Phase intensiven Experimentierens und Suchens nach neuen Wegen auf fast allen für Haydn besonders bedeutsamen Gebieten der Instrumentalmusik, der Symphonie, dem Streichquartett und der Klaviersonate, bildet. Da die Eintragungen im Entwurf-Katalog lediglich die ersten zwei bis vier Takte der je ersten Sätze der Sonaten wiedergeben, musste der Verfasser nicht nur den restlichen Verlauf der Eröffnungssätze weitgehend selbst erdichten, er war auch bei der Gesamtanlage der Sonaten (Anzahl und musikalischer Inhalt der übrigen Sätze) insofern auf sich allein gestellt, als der Entwurf-Katalog hierüber keine Auskunft gibt. Als stilistische Vorbilder dienten naturgemäß die im genannten Zeitraum komponierten und erhaltenen Sonaten. Darüber hinaus hat der Verfasser versucht, eine möglichst große Bandbreite der verschiedenen Formen, die in Haydns Musik dieses Zeitraums zu finden sind, abzubilden. Ebenso differenziert und zur Nachahmung herausfordernd ist der Abwechslungsreichtum der Satztechniken, die Haydn verwendet. Dem Vorbild Haydns folgend sind vor allem die dynamischen Angaben auf ein Minimum reduziert und sollen bewusst Raum zur eigenen fantasievollen Interpretation lassen. (Thomas Enselein).

For the two volumes of Giraffe Piano, the most favoured and instructive of the sonatinas have been chosen. Volume 1 contains simpler pieces and Volume 2 is compromised of moderately difficult ones. Correct interpretation of the pieces is facilitated by added performance and fingeringmarks. Learning is helped along by clear presentation of the score, carefully placed page turns, and by inspiration from colour images showing the keyboard instruments of the 1720-1820 period for which the pieces were written. Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e.unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period, some of which are dated 1698.The sonatasare both inscribed on the title page Sonata Violone Solo. Col Basso per l'Organo, o Cembalo. A third sonata bears the words Sonata Violino e Violoncino â?¦ di Giovannino del Violone. Giovannino (=Little, or Young John)musthave been a performer, and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand, it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot, however, be assumed to be theirauthor.The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets, and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino (=Little Violone, orVioloncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family, which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or a bass Viol, and notnecessarily a Violone as such. Indeed, when they are played on a Violone, or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument, to prevent inversion of the intended harmony. (The use ofa Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It is open to debate whether aViolone player, owing to the very nature of his instrument, would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. Tomasso Antonio Vitali was born in 1663 in Bologna and died in 1745 in Modena. His father, Giovanni Battista Vitali was one of the most famous musicians of his time. The young Vitali must have received most of his musical education from him. The present edition of Vitali's four sonatas is a selection from the composer's twelve sonatas surviving in manuscript. The four selected sonatas do not put too high technical demands on the violin so that even students with only some years violin training can safely perform them. Territorial restrictions may apply. The present volume in the EMB Urtext series is the first complete practical edition of the set of trio sonatas for two violins or two flutes by the prominent Italian violin player of the late Baroque. The six trio sonatas do not belong to the usual Corellian type but introduce bold novelties with regard to form, harmony and melody alike. The sixth sonata proves to be particularly interesting since each of the solo instruments conducted in canon have their own continuo part.

The Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64, and the Sonata in F minor, op. 4, are the only works for solo violin that Mendelssohn had had printed during his lifetime. However, his complete oeuvre includes other completed or fragmentary compositions, including two further concertos and several unfinished sonatas and other individual pieces. He himself had an extraordinary command of the violin and entrusted the instrument in several other works, such as the Octet op. 20 or the concert aria Infelice! - Ah, ritorno, eta dell'oro, with special tasks. Nevertheless, with regard to details of playing technique, he usually sought advice from solo violinist friends, first from Eduard Ritz, then, after Ritz's early death, from Ferdinand David. The present volume contains all of the completed and fragmentary compositions for violin and piano that have survived - from the early Prelude and Fugue in D and G minor from Zelter's practice book (1820), which can be assigned without doubt, through to the Sonata in F major (1838) in their various versions.
