And now for something completely different! Who but William Himes would think of deconstructing and the reconstructing the birthday song into this amazingly creative overture? And, who else could do it so well? The cognitive and the affective domains are both in for a treat as you prepare this intriguing new work for performance. Be sure to hear the CD demo and look closely at the score. There are some amazing things going on here.Unexpected!

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect!

This programmatic piece tells the biblical story of the fall of Jericho. The music paints a vivid picture of the procession of armed men and seven priests marching around the city for seven days, before blowing their trumpets and to the cheers of the crowds watching as the walls came tumbling down. A dazzling opening work for any concert.

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The ??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher?? from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The ??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher?? faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!1834 - Machara Impressions was a commission for the 175th anniversary of the band Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher from the town of Grevenmacher - formerly Machara - in Luxemburg. It is a work of many contrasts with alternating peace and excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages - reflecting the peaceful and turbulent history of the band.

This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra??s name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for itswarmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa??s typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert. This fantasy tells the story of Oregon, one of Americas north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad, the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians, cowboys, golddiggers and hooded wagons willfile past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies, which could be the main themes of a movie, pass the review. The piece begins in a slow movement, introducing the first theme inminor. Then we hear in the following fast movement the trombones imitate the train, whistling the steam-flute. We hear the characteristic minor theme again, but now in different variants(also in major). The rythmic structure of western stile androck succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement, where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody, the fast movement appears shortly again, the trombones whistling thesteam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements, that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges, jazzy chords, interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. Afterthis, the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly, followed by the Allargando, which is agrand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end. A highly energetic concert opener, High Vibration is a bright and fast fanfare that will leave your audience in awe. This brilliantly scored fanfare will showcase the intensity of the brass section, the sweeping flourishes of the woodwind section, and the metallic nature of keyboard and auxiliary percussion. High Vibration emphasizes consistent transitioning from compound meter to simple meter exposing the ensemble to multiple time signatures and metric modulation.

This is the composition that started it all! A classic of the wind band literature for concert and contest alike. It was something completely different, with its appearance in 1964. The band??s literature had not experienced the trademark 7/8 measures, which we all know as a Smith trait. This composition also includes one of his few full band fugatos. Excellent percussion writing and a combination of all themes come together in a direct modulation to C Major. Originally titled Overture for Winds and Percussion, the word Emperata has no meaning; it was just, as Claude put it, an intriguing word! Still Smith??s best-selling work.

Symphonic Variations on In Dulci Jubilo promotes joy and celebration. ??In Dulci Jubilo?? is Latin for ??in sweet rejoicing??. The lovely choral beginning features the familiar carol Good Christian Men, Rejoice, and forms the groundwork for this unique setting of this timeless traditional Christmas carol. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as thirteen musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound. *The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

A delightful three-movement work to show off the band??s skill at playing different styles. The first movement marked Tarantella, includes an asymmetric 9/8 measure and a woodwind fugato. Nocturne features solos for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. Rondo begins with a fierce percussion section soli throughout the movement, and a reflection of developmental material from the Nocturne shows up in this movement as well. A challenging work, but your group will learn several musical concepts. A concert band classic.

Inspired by the command and structure of two Henri Matisse paintings under the name The Music Lesson, this powerful work for alto saxophone and band will become a staple of the repertoire. From the strict structure of the opening piano statement to the classically influenced melodic interplay with the saxophone, the piece moves through a flowing musical environment highlighted by a virtuosic cadenza. The recapitulation of the initial melodic line completes our music lesson and provides a strong conclusion to Three Conversations With Matisse, a suite for alto saxophone and band.

A march composed in a classic American style, The Royal Hawaiian is based on the famous Aloha Oe composed by Queen Lili'uokalani in 1878. Arabian Sandscapes by Rossano Galante is a stunning work that opens with a bold, unison statement of the main theme by the brasses. After the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets, creates an even more heroic feel. The piece then yields to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section of this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting the faraway lands of Arabia. (5:20) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
