Yakolo. Yakolo is originally a dance song from Africa. It reflects the people of Africa?s zest for life, following the maxim ?Come and join us!?. In this work, the ?call and response? principle is featured as a trademark element of traditional African music. The rhythmic melodies invite listeners to sing and dance along and thus give shape to the African art of celebrating together. The repeating themes will be sure to put a smile on everyone?s face!

Ce morceau, destiné à alimenter le répertoire du 1er Orchestre National de Jazz, fut composé en novembre 1985. Les influences africaines que l'on peut repérer à son écoute sont indéniables, surtout lorsque l'on sait qu'il a été composé à partir de chants pygmées. Kalimba est d'ailleurs l'un des noms que l'on donne en Afrique de l'Ouest à un petit instrument à lamelles métalliques et caisse de résonance généralement en bois, le piano à pouce.Enchevêtrement de petits motifs mélodiques, permettant une grande diversité dans l'instrumentation, liberté dans l'organisation de la forme, succession de différentes signatures rythmiques, travail sur l'harmonisation des motifs, tel a été le schéma directeur de cette composition.Je souhaite que vous ayez plaisir à le jouer. Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously the percussion section has a conspicious role to play but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'.
