Par TORSKANGERPOLL IDAR. This piece for beginning band was written as a commission for Norsk Noteservice to the “Music for Beginners” serie. The piece is a feelgood item with limited range for all instruments, suitable for young players. The rhythmic structure is repetitive and polyphony is often in the “call and response” form. Par BRAKSTAD JOHN. 'Interlude for Band' is an arrangement based on the theme from 'Affinity and Fellowship'. 'Affinity and Fellowship' was commissioned by Nord-Odal Concert Band, and published by Warner/Chappell Music Norway (Noteservice). 'Interlude for Band' is a piece with elements of ensemble, including an important solo part. Norwegian Festival Overture. Par HALVORSEN JOHAN. The Norwegian Festival Overture was written for the grand opening of the National Theatre on September 1st, 1899. In the opening bars, one can virtually imagine the stage curtain being drawn aside, and the stage is revealed to the audience. The trumpets openly quote Peer Gynts return from Grieg's music to the play Peer Gynt. The main part of the overture consists of a theme in Norwegian folk music style, which Halvorsen brilliantly develops thematically and contrapuntally. The work can probably be seen as pompous and at times seems somewhat overwrought, but then Halvorsen himself, ever so slightly self-deprecating, has written Pomposo over the grand conclusion of the work. The arrangement of the overture was written to The Royal Norwegian Navy Band for a concert in Halvorsen’s native town of Drammen in 2016. The arranger has tried to preserve as much as possible of Halvorsen's brilliant orchestration. Grand Nordic Tune. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. 'Storslått' or in English ?Grand Nordic Tune? is one of many original pieces written by composer Øystein Olsen Vadsten. 'Slått' is a general term for music played to traditional Norwegian dances. ?Grand Nordic Tune? was a commissioned work for the Rælingen Musikklag's 70-year anniversary concert in 2022, where the piece was premiered. They wanted something a little pompous, and preferably something in the style of Nordic folk music, which the composer is known for. The title in Norwegian then was obvious, 'Storslått', which in Norwegian has a double meaning, both a big tune and, in a double meaning, pompous or magnificent. As usual, the starting point is a traditional Nordic dance form, and this time the choice fell on the distinctive Swedish 'polska', which is played in ¾. The dance, despite its name, reportedly has no connection to Poland, but is entirely of Scandinavian origin. It has been danced for centuries, and has also been called the devil's dance, because it had a hypnotizing effect on people, so that they could not stop, but danced themselves to death. Hence people thought that it must have been the devil who caused it. Sverddansen. Par ROGERS SCOTT. The sword dance is a tradition in many cultures. The Scottish sword dances date back to the 15th century. This traditional melody captures all the excitement and energy of the sword dance through insistent rhythms, variation in dynamics and a big accelerando at the end. Par SCHJELDERUP FREDRICK. Momentum Sequences was commissioned by Skjold Skoles Musikkorps (Norway) for their 60th Anniversary in 2021 (later adapted for brass band to Smørås Skolemusikk). The title of the term Momentum can be explained by an event that creates extra energy, or the driving force of a moving object. In this case, both the driving force, The energy and the object can be translated to the music, the conductor and the band. The piece is divided in three movements; «I.Signals», «II.Light» and «III.Finale» which builds up the Momentum of the piece’ character and theme. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

Queen of Lake Malaren March. Par WIDQVIST VIKTOR. One of Viktor Widqvist's most well-known marches is undoubtedly Mälarrottningen. It was probably composed as early as the 1910s when he was serving in the engineering troops, but was published as late as 1950. The march's subtle minor tonality and the elegant runs in the woodwind bring to mind the wavy waters of Riddarfjärden in summertime. Mälardrottningen is just like the other marches by Widqvist composed for the old military band setting without saxophones. The big challenge has been to rearrange the music without changing the timbre and I have put a lot of emphasis on keeping the elegance and resilience of the original and therefore let some instruments pause in parts to get transparency in the timbre. Solo for Euphonium and Concert Band. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. “Song for Frances” is a classic love ballad, written for concert band and brass band, with a soloist on euphonium. The piece always has the soloist in focus and gives him plenty of room to show off, both a warm sound and technical skills. In the first part of “Song for Frances”, the basic melody is clearly presented, while the rest of the piece is more of a written 'as if improvisation' with various melodic and technical 'whims'. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. This arrangement was written for Norwegian School Band Madlamark Skolekorps to their participation at the Norwegian Championships 2023. The arrangement will work excellent also for a wind ensemble (one player to each part), but the clarinet parts should always be doubled. Euphonium II is optional, but it’s recommended to use also this when there are two players or more on this instrument. Concerning percussion, timpani is the most important part, but it’s recommended to also cover cymbals and mallet percussion. The articulation and dynamics are kept as close as possible to the original version by Dvorak. However, some changes has been made to make it more suitable for a wind instrumentation. The timpani part is identical to the original version except for some places when the trumpet signals are doubled in the timpani part. Staccato notation should not be played short here, but rather separated. At faster passages, the music should be played endurant or legato if possible. This arrangement is a good opportunity to perform music of highest quality where musicality, phrasing, balance and intonation are very important, and, where each musician and part are deeply involved in the music making. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie
