Composer, musician Timo Alakotila (b. 1959) is a distinguished, active and versatile talent in the Finnish music scene whose long career working with different genres of music ? folk music in particular ? has been ground-breaking. Alakotila?s works showcase his versatility: he has produced highly acclaimed classical music compositions and arrangements for Pekka and Jaakko Kuusisto, the Meta4 quartet, the Kamus and Tempera quartets, Eeva Oksala, Dalia Stasevska and Jorma Hynninen, among others. Timo Alakotila's Hope 2021 was commissioned by Kaustinen Chamber Music Week and its artistic director, violinist Kaija Saarikettu. The topic of the work invokes the hope for brighter future after the pandemic. It is scored for string quintet (two violins, viola, cello and double bass) and piano. The middle section, a wistful minuet with folk music features is enveloped with hopeful melody both opening and closing the work. String quartet no. 3. Par ALAKOTILA TIMO. Timo Alakotila's La cantina (String quartet no. 3, 2013) was commissioned by a distinguished Finnish string quartet Kamus. The title of the quartet in four movements was inspired by the ongoing renovation in the composer's basement (ital. La cantina) after a water damage. The first movement leads from tentative dialogues to a powerful unison. The lyrical second movement (San Giovanni) is followed by a mysterious and wistful waltz. The finale (Fretta) rushes ahead all the way until the end. Par KOSKELIN OLLI. Energetic and bouncy, Olli Koskelin's Animal II for bass clarinet (2019/2020) is a nine-minute non-stoppable ride. This product is a B4 sized folder, sheet music (performance score) enclosed as loose pages. Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. It was premiered in S:t John's Church in Helsinki, Finland - with 70 metres' distance between the two instruments. This product includes one playing score with the both instruments parts. Koskinen (b. 1972) tells about his String quartet no. 2: 'Second string quartet (2014) is connected to great changes in my personal life. A few months after the score was finished, I became a father. The musical key moment is found at the very end of the work; Holy Night allusions are embedded to the finale of the work - con tenerezza, with ten-derness.' Composer Jennah Vainio sees End Credits for string trio (2016) as a portrayal of a person's inner mind: 'It is a beautiful, tender and introvert snapshot of a moment, a journey into the thoughts of a person. The work can be visualized by a video edited by myself. It is filmed shot by my father on an 8-mm film during a train trip in Germany in 1972. My grandfather briefly appears on the film, at the time the same age as I am now. As human beings and parts of the nature we are a links in an endless continuum - the train tracks reaching out to an eternity symbolise all this.' Par KOSKELIN OLLI. X'Three (2003/2021) by Olli Koskelin is the third piece of a solo cello suite consisting of seven compositions. Each of the seven pieces can be performed individually or detached with other X'-compositions. Different works are yet to be performed chronologically. The X'-works are composed by using the same material viewed from many different angles. Their structure can be seen as a film starting several times from the beginning and from the same settings always looked from a new perspective. In some compositions of the X'-suite seemingly random fragments are joined together organically in other works of the suite. The story, tale, or plot of the music and the gestures and figures of it trans-form in a new context but remain identifiable.
