Big Note/Large Print-Warm-ups for the Violist is an adaptation of Warm-ups for the Violinist. It is targeted to help build strengthen and develop the muscles and techniques needed for viola playing. It is especially suited and created for the morecasual violist who is sincerely interested in getting maximum benefit from a minimum of effort. I first tested these scales and exercises on myself for six months faithfully using them for about 20 minutes as warm-ups to my dailypractice. I was rewarded with a definite improvement in my technique. I was actually surprised to see my dexterity grow as I charted my metronomic progress on a calendar. I remember thinking 'I will never be able to play fasterthan this.' But then a couple of weeks later I would indeed climb a notch higher!Through the years I have used these exercises in countless workshops and with private students. The letters of thanks and positive feedback fromstudents who were thrilled with improved violin and fiddle technique have brought me great satisfaction. Progress with these exercises is like the progress of a body builder. Body builders do not get up in the morning and think 'I am going to develop and build my muscles today ' and instantly look like Mr. Atlas. It takes weeks months and for some years to attain results. It must be done over a period of time. Like all diets and exercise programs determination and dedication are most important to success! I sincerely believe that these exercises when faithfully practiced will help violists improve their skills. The exercises will help develop and strengthen muscles usedfor finger dexterity clarity of notes tone bowing-arm control intonation double stops and a flexible bowing-arm wrist. Volume 1 contains eleven pieces for Viola with Piano accompaniment. This is a valuable resource for teachers and students of all ages and offers a broad spectrum of pieces some of which will be familiar many of which will be new to you. A large number of the works in this series have long been recognised as stepping-stones to the major Viola repertoire while others are newly published pieces for further choices of study. The Viola part is included in a separatepull-out book and a table describes the technical and musical features as well as the relevant Suzuki Viola level for cross-method teaching. Many violists have grown up on a diet of Violin studies transcribed for Viola and plenty have thrived on them even though the studies are in many cases composed with melodic patterns and fingerings that suit the Violin better than the Viola. Robin Ireland's aim in composing this new study material was to write specifically for the Viola in ways which suit it both technically and tonally.The twelve concert études set out to be musically attractive pieces which in addition to addressing most basic aspects of technique will encourage the development of 'musical' and expressive playing.The set of études is unusual perhaps unique in that it covers a rangeof styles and thus provides a focus for developing an understanding of bowing and articulation appropriate to different periods of music. The first eight études move through baroque classical and romantic styles while the later études include material for developing confidence with metre change and other basic rhythmic skills and with atonality. The last étude introduces an improvisatory style of playing.The concert études should be appropriate for Viola students from Grade 8 upwards. These studies are each focused primarily on a single area of technical development in many cases an area not specifically addressed in currently available study material.The new études do not set out to provide a comprehensive alternative to existing study material but rather to complement it and extend its range.
