The composer, pianist and piano teacher Leopold Ko?eluch (1747-1818) was one of the leading Czech musicians in 18th-century Vienna. His 50 sonatas for keyboard bear witness not only to the transition from the harpsichord or clavichord to the pianoforte, but also to the evolution of the classical sonata at the turn of the 19th century.Until now there have been few modern editions of this music. Our new edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, is the first to present all of Ko?eluch's sonatas for solo keyboard. Each of the four volumes contains 12 to 13 sonatas in chronological order by date of initial publication. Arranger: Haan, Stefan de Composer: Seiber, Mátyás Preface: Haan, Stefan de The Dance Suite for alto saxophone and piano is an arrangement of selected pieces from Mátyás Seiber's Easy Dances, originally composed as piano pieces on the popular dance-styles of the 1920s and 30s and focusing particularly on the rhythmic characteristics of each. Seiber's life and work linked and developed many diverse musical influences, from the Hungarian tradition of Bartók and Kodály, to Schoenberg and Serial Music, to jazz, folksong, film and lighter music (rewarded by an Ivor Novello Prize for 'By The Fountains of Rome'). Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself.The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers.In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works.An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed.The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Brahms' arrangements for violin and piano unaccountably disappeared from the standard repertoire early in the 20th century. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself.The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers.In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works.An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. The Czech composer Antonin Rejcha (also Anton Reicha, 1770?1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His ?36 Fugues for Piano? testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of
?Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages?, basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments.
The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha?s own publishing company ?Au Magasin de l?Imprimerie chimique?. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style. The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text ?Über das neue Fugensystem? (?On the new fugal system?) in the form of a polemic, reacting to his critics, one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Handel).
The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Václav Jan Sýkora from 1973, which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna, c. 1828).

Piano Solo-Programme noteConte op. 27 was commissioned by the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki to be one of two interchangeable obligatory contemporary numbers in Maj Lind Piano Competition for young talented Finnish pianists. I wrote the piece in the beginning of the year 1985; the competition took place a year later.?Conte? is the French word for ?a story? or ?a fairy tale?. This does not mean that I am trying to tell any specific story with the music. The title refers to two things mainly. On the one hand both the harmonic and the textural colouring ofthe piece are connected with the world of fairies and trolls. On the other hand musical ideas in this piece are treated in a way which inevitably brings to my mind the oral tradition of story-telling ? formally speaking. Conte has ties with the ways in which rambling fantastic stories are told. The small musical cells are like persons in a story more or less important and every story has its own fate. These individual fates collide with each other in a more or less random capricious way and cause continuously new situations for the principal figures. The net is always moving ? after all no one can be the same before and after an important meeting.On the level of the sounding surface I guess that the most important feature of Conte is a certain nervousness a kind of electric swarming which is due to the characteristics of the chosen material itself. Nor do the stories of a good story-teller get stuck.Jouni Kaipainen

PIANO SONATA NO. 3 was written in 1960 during the composer?s studies at HAMU (Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) under Emil Hlobil. The first half of the 1960s was the period during which Fiser?s musical language underwent fundamental change as he rapidly cultivated his own, distinctive style, established in Fifteen Prints after Dürer?s Apocalypse. This sonata thus also includes several essential traits which shift his compositional development further. The work has two movements, however, its internal structure abandons traditional form. The piece is divided into several short, mutually contrasting sections, whereby the distinctions between the adjacent parts are emphasised by the thematic and chordal treatment. These contrasts are also supported by the chosen dynamics, tempo and other expressional means. The harmony is largely based on traditional chords or their condensed form while, in certain passages, we will nevertheless come across semitone clusters or fourth chords. The melody is still chiefly diatonic at times Fiser uses chromatic sequences. These new elements in Sonata No. 3 indicate an attempt to simplify his writing and ensure greatest transparency and impact. This endeavour became a basic characteristic of Fiser?s compositions from the mid-1960s onwards. The sonata originally bore the postscript Fantasia, which was subsequently taken out by the composer. It was first performed by Ales Bílek in 1961. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1967) only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer?s manuscript (kept at the National Museum ? Les MarionnettesA marionette is a string-operated puppet. Popular from as far back as Ancient Greece and increasingly the focus of entertainment during the Middle Ages and Renaissance period it has been proposed that the art of puppetry was the logical precursor to the appearance of live actors in the theatre. Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet Petrushka which was completed in 1911 (the same year as Grovlez's L'Almanach incidentally) undoubtedly remains thebest-known evocation of a puppet. 2. Berceuse de la Poupée'Lullaby for a doll' though a seemingly improbable starting point for a musical work functions beautifully next to the marionettes in Grovlez's magical image-rich world though I detect something faintly subversive bubbling under the surface of this sublime melody. 3. La SarabandeThe 'Sarabande' is a stately dance in triple-time with a characteristic gentle emphasis on the second beat and was apparently first referenced in print in Central America during the 16th century (zarabanda). It rapidly grew in popularity over successive centuries especially within the Spanish colonies – and of course in Spain itself – where its reputation as having being 'invented in hell' (according to Cervantes) assured it a place in dance suites from Bach's time onwards. 4. Chanson du Chasseur'Hunter's Song' is a rollicking rum-tee-tum piece of great insouciance and swagger. The 6/8 rhythms and horn-like proclamations ride delightfully roughshod throughout the music. 5. Les Ânes'The Donkeys'. I presume Eee-orrr has the same connotation in French! – moreover the comical spirit of the music is not so far removed from Ibert's famous Le Petit Âne Blanc (Avec une tranquille

The piano pieces by Nikolay Andreyevitch Roslawez selected here and published for the first time complement the already published piano sonatas (ED 7941, ED 8391, ED 8392) and individual pieces (ED 7907). Created in the years 1919 and 1921, they represent the central phase of the composer's development and are characteristic of Roslawez' mature style. Although reminiscent of Skryabin in their musical language, the six miniatures 'Berceuse', 'Danse', 'Valse', '2 Préludes' and 'Poème' are technically easy to play and are suitable for piano lessons. Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was one of the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s.
