In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry.This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. Organ Chorales From The Neumeister Collection Yale University Manuscript 'Lm 4708'. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In 1985 Christoph Wolff, working at Yale University, discovered a collection of 82 chorales compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1756-1840) which contained 38 compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. They reveal great stylistic variety whose forebears stem from the Northern German organ tradition. Already these early works comprising fantasias, fugues, fughettas and imitative techniques employing motifs from chorale melodies bear witness to Bach' s broad compositional spectrum. This newly published volume is an updated edition of Series IV/9 of the ' New Bach Edition” (NBA), edited by Christoph Wolff and based on this source. In addition to a newly added concordance and corrections to the musical text, it also contains a detailed Foreword by Christoph Wolff with further information on the Neumeister Collection and hymnological details. This journey begins with the Organ Sonata No. 1 in C sharp minor, op. 5 and ends with Quiet Voluntary for Evensong, op. 70, composed in 1946 when the composer was eighty-seven. In the intervening years came many and varied compositions often demanding an instrument of ample resources together with a player equal to their somewhat formidable technical demands. Displaying a fine sense of craftsmanship, they represent an important contribution to the organ repertoire. Although quite some time has passed since the multifaceted organ music from Spain's Golden Age could be called an 'insider's tip?, it had yet to attain popularity with any wide audience outside the countries of the Iberian Peninsula. The three-volume Urtext edition of selected works by Joan Cabanilles, the cathedral organist from Valencia, now has every chance of becoming a milestone in its own right.
