Partly on account of their instrumentation, the Op. 18 sonatas are closely modelled on Corelli's Opp. 1aEUR4, both in terms of style and violin technique. Each consists of four or five movements, at least one being a dance; most of the slow movements feature the familiar Corellian walking bass, while one of the fast movements in each sonata is fugal or based on imitative entries. In spite of their adherence to Italian models, however, the sonatas do display certain French elements, along with characteristics of Boismortier's individual style. The harmonic language is particularly rich, with a marked predilection for chords of the seventh, and two of the sonatas feature the composer's own version of a (loosely constructed) double fugue.

This famous work is for an ensemble of 5 flutes, a rare combination. The writing is frequently Italian in style. Note that the composer also envisaged performance by other melodic instruments the work may therefore be played by 5 violins, 5 oboes or 5 recorders.

Op. 21 was intended for a flute, a violin or second flute, and basso continuo (with a musette or recorder proposed as alternatives to the flute in Concerto No. 3), but the deliberately generic writing and limited range of the treble parts means that the works are playable on a variety of instruments. Boismortier has also provided an ‘ad lib’ ripieno part for a third (unspecified) treble instrument which mainly doubles the flute in the ritornellos; even though this part is optional, it does have independent music in two of the slow movements.

Boismortier is considered to be one of the most popular and most hard-working composers of his time. The original title of this sonata in A Minor indicates flutes, violins and other instruments as well suited for performance. The composer arranged the first melody part in such a way that it can be played by an alto recorder without any changes. Scored for string chorus, the sonata achieves a very good tonal effect. With soloistic scoring, three equal instruments (e.g. three violins) or three completely different instruments (e.g. flute, violin, oboe) are best suited for the performance of the upper parts.
