Philip Wilby (b.1949) is a Yorkshire-based contemporary composer. Since 1990 he has been best known for his extensive and highly successful Brass Band repertoire while maintaining a steady output of liturgical andchoral work. His delightful carol The Word Made Flesh was written in 1987 for the choir of Bradford Cathedral. The lyrics are taken from the poem by Ben Jonson (c.1573-1637) ?I Sing The Birth Was BornTonight? (c.1600 but published posthumously) which reflects on the nativity scene. The carol is scored for SATB with an organ accompaniment and is of approx. 3 minutes duration.

Jazz Chorals-This slow samba by Brazilian singer/songwriter Djavan is artfully arranged for SATB with soprano solo and rhythm section by jazz educator/arranger Paris Rutherford.

Morten Lauridsen's Nocturnes addresses aspects of the common theme of 'Night' in arrangements for accompanied SATB chorus.  His setting of Rilke's impassioned and atmosphereic Sa nuit d'ete is rich with dense colourful harmonies while Soneto de la noche is quiet serene and fold-like reflecting the eloquence with which the poet Pablo Neruda speaks of everlasting eternal love. Sure on the shining night is a lyrical beautiful setting of James Agee's well-loved poem. Rilke is the source of the epilogue  Voici le soir bringingthe Nocturnes to a quiet end as darkness arrives. Matthew Martin's setting of Adam Lay Ybounden was first performed by the Choir of Westminster Cathedral at St. George's Hanover Sqaure London on December 19th 2006.  You can purchase the sheet music arranged for Mixed Voices and Piano Accompaniment released as part of the Faber Choral Signature Series.  Matthew Martin was educated at Magdalen College Oxford and at the Royal Academy of Music London. He subsequently held positions at New College Oxford and Canterbury Cathedral before moving to Westminster Cathedral as Assistant Master of Music in 2004. He is an active composer organ recitalist improviser and conductor. Recent commissions have come from The Cardinall's Musick Westminster Abbey Westminster Cathedral and St. Paul's Cathedral.
