Invocation was written for the Choir of The Queen’s College Oxford and represents the culmination of the composer’s time as a research fellow at the college when he worked closely with the choir. Phillip had long been a devotee of Edward Thomas’s evocative poem Adlestrop with its dreamy pastoral feel invoking the very essence of a sultry English country afternoon. It seemed a natural choice to set not least because it mentions the two counties in which he has spent the last seven years Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Phillip wanted the workfurther to emphasise the link with everything we might class as a stereotypical English countryafternoon cricket on the green church bells birdsong and warm beer the mythical ‘middle-England’. His work in no way tries to depict this rather to distil the feeling it is a rhapsody on a theme of English country life that men went to war to preserve something very different from the more rugged landscape he grew up with in the Lake District. American composer organist and harpsichordist Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) studied the Organ and music theory at Phillips Academy in Andover before studying at Harvard. His Christmas Cantata is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire. Pinkham was famously moved by a concert in Andover given by the Trapp family singers in 1939 soon after they had escaped Austria. He quoted 'Here suddenly I was hearing clarity simplicity. It shaped my whole outlook.' Pinkham''s career saw him teach at the Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music as well as being organist of King''s Chapel inBoston for 42 years. His compositions varied from symphonies to art songs althought predominantly his music was religious in nature frequently incorporating a choir and Organ. Christmas Cantata represents Pinkham''s influence of 20th-Century trends often embracing plainchant joining Stravinsky and Hindemith''s revival of early music. For all aspiring choirs seeking varied modern repertoire Christmas Cantata provides an exciting performance work.

The Phoenix Mass was conceived in 1965 although the Sanctus and Angus Dei were not written down until 1969. As its name implies it marks a resurgence of creative activity after a fallow period. In the wordsof the composer 'It is a record of spiritual rather than denominationally religious experience'.This work (for SATB chorus trumpets and trombones) was first performed by the BBC Chorus and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble conducted by John Poole in a broadcast on BBC radio 3 on October 2 1973.Score.
