Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (Behold the Great Priest) comes from the early European tradition of plainchant. Bruckner's setting of the responsory, originally scored for eight-part mixed choir, organ and three trombones, brings certain medieval qualities to an otherwise Romantic-era composition. This transcription for 10-part brass choir is appropriate for intermediate level and above and attempts to retain the majesty, power, and beauty of the original piece. It should be approached as a choral piece: connected and fluid. The harmonic language is essentially triadic; great care should be taken in the tuning of each chord throughout the piece. Instrumentation is for: 3 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba. Listen to the live performance by a young group of musicians conducted by Dr. Paul Stevens, Professor of Horn at KU.

Composed for the Alwinton and Holystone Church Choir near the composer's home in Northumberland, John Casken sets Christina Rossetti's In the bleak mid-winter - a poem popularised by Gustav Holts' setting of the same name for SATB choir and organ. A traditional carol based on the nativity it paints a vivid picture of the chill of winter and is ideal for choirs wishing to move away from the well-known whilst retaining an element of tradition. Constantly flowing organ lines create a sense of unease but this is uplifting music with subtle crescendos and powerful homophonic writing for the voices.

“Having been considered as a 'fashionable' and 'cliché' composer of his day, Hahn's compositions are possibly not as well-known as they ought to be. Rondels for SATB choir and Piano however, shatter these prejudices held, representing the engaging diversity of the composer's music. Venezuelan born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoire at 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes, Lavignac, Dubois and Massenet before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself, writing works for all genres. For Hahn, music was a magical art and his compositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions and moods. Rondels is made up of twelve movements, depicting different aspects of nature. Hahn's Rondels contains a variety of different features, making for a pleasant and evocative work for advanced choirs.&rdquo.

French composer, Pierre Boulez (b. 1925) is best known for his serialist, experimental and electronic compositions. However, his work for Soprano, Mixed Choir and Piano Reduction, The Water Sun also remains regularly performed. Having studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen, Boulez soon began his own creative experiments. Amongst his earlier works was his cantata, The Water Sun, composed in the late 1940s. The work has since been revised many times. Based on poems by Rene Char, The Water Sun is atonal, exploiting many techniques. For advanced choirs and Soprano soloists, Boulez's The Water Sun provides a challenging yet riveting performance work..

“French composer, Jean-Louis Florentz (1947-2004) was a prolific student of Olivier Messiaen. Asmara, composed in 1992, is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire. Florentz's music is described as having ”“a strong, evocative power which keeps the clarity of the French style.”“ Asmara, named after the capital of Eritrea, was commissioned by the Culture Minister and is composed for a mixed voice choir. The text is written in the native Ethiopian and a helpful pronunciation glossary is provided, preceding the score. For all advanced choirs seeking to vary their repertoire, Florentz's Asmara makes for an exciting performance.&rdquo.
