Among the many works for which Brahms is celebrated his Choral oeuvre is significant. This first Choral work Ave Maria originally written for SSAA and Organ is not mere juvenilia. The flowing 6/8 piece is structured like ashort sonata movement with the two pairs of Voices trading contrapuntal entrances until the parts join their Voices in the pleading ‘Ora pro nobis’ all with Brahmsian harmonies in the accompaniment.Brahms later arranged the workfor SSAA and Orchestra followed by this setting for Chorus and Piano.

Heinrich Poos is not the first composer inspired by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's poem 'Die Auferstehung', as even Gustav Mahler had already used these verses in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony 'Auferstehung'. Mahler was inspired to use a choral movement at the end of his symphony at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow where a choir sang a chorale based on said text by Klopstock. Hugo Cole (1917-1995) was a British composer cellist and music critic. He studied under Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He is best remembered for writing several operas and choral works as well as much chamber music but he also wrote a series of pedagogical Cello books and had a successful career as a music critic for The Guardian and Country Life. Cole’s Magnificat was set in the key of G major and first published in 1957. It is scored for Female or Boys’ Choir (SSAA) with Piano accompaniment.

George Mackay Brown's poetry with its haiku-like short stanzas and pointillisteallusive imagery leaves you constantly intrigued : who is the boy 'lost on the hill till sundown' and why is time 'a bird with white wings?' Is this perhaps the poet himself playing a bit of holiday truant?

SSAA Version - Score-The work is based on the Latin Christmas hymn Puer natus in Bethlehem from the 13th century and along the way the German fishing melody Ein Kind geborn zu Bethlehem from the 16th century onwards.
