Alth ough many of the greatest composers from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods did not write for marimba, their works are still available and are perfectly suited for this instrument. Many of these works were written for violin and contain bowings and fingerings that assist in the stylistic interpretation for violin but do not apply to marimba. This latest work in the Master Class series presents a comprehensive, interpretive analysis and performance guide of three major works for solo marimba by San Francisco Symphony Principal Percussionist Jack Van Geem. Van Geem's well-thought-out approach to learning Velocities by Joseph Schwantner helps solve many of the difficult 4-mallet technical issues of this most notable composition for solo marimba. His extensive theoretical analysis of Three Small Adventures by Gunther Schuller aids in a greater musical approach to this and other contemporary works for marimba. Van Geem provides his personal edition including dynamics, phrasing, and articulations to J. S. Bach's Fuga in G minor. Van Geem outlines his philosophy of solo marimba technique and how mallet position increases a player's accuracy and provides an important aid in memorization. This in-depth publication covers topics such as sticking options, beating spots, hand & arm postures, memorization, practicing, learning the art of triaging, and more.

“The fourth volume of a series of books for percussionists by Emmanuel Séjourné, 5 pieces for Marimba, Vol.4 is a set of 5 works for 4 to 4.5 Marimbas. Written for advanced level players and inspired from African rhythms, the three first compositions can be played each after the other or separately. The five pieces are: Balafon Ambira Akadinda Generalife Pretexte The names of these 5 pieces for Marimba, Vol.4 were given after different African instruments of wooden blades that can be found in various places. While Pretexte is quite jazzy with its strong beat, Generalife is more dynamic and should be played with more energy and character. Emmanuel Séjourné (born in 1961) is a French percussionist and composer, who was strongly influenced by Western music and popular music. He wrote a series of books for percussionists including 'Keyboard and Percussions, Vol. 1'.&rdquo.
