Par L'ESTRANGE ALEXANDER. Prayers for Peace is a collection of three beautiful prayer settings by Alexander L'Estrange: God be in my head, Lighten our Darkness, and The Lord's Prayer. Ideal as introits, anthems or in a concert programme, the pieces are testament to L'Estrange's ability to write music which is simple and accessible yet at the same time full of expression and exquisite harmonies. The settings are for unaccompanied SATB but they have an optional piano/organ part to provide support if required. Written for the wedding of friends of the composer Peace is a beautiful setting by Paul Mealor of the well-known prayer of St Francis of Assisi.The combination of pleasingly simple melodies and the rich harmonic expression so characteristic of the composer makes for a heart-warming and uplifting piece of music. This anthem The Peace That Surpasseth Understanding by John Tavener was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and the Ministry of Defence. It was first performed at a Service in Honourof the Passing of the World War One Generation in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 11th November 2009 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh by the Choir of Westminster Abbeyconducted by James O’Donnell. COMPOSER’S NOTEIn this setting of Saint Paul’s great statement I have tried in a simple and primordial manner to suggest majesty solemnity and a radiance of peace andbliss. I have also given the music a ceremonial nature by inserting ‘Allelouias’ sounding from ‘Heaven’ (semi-chorus) gradually rising in pitch until they are answered by ‘Allelouias’ from‘The World’ (main choir). The music forms a gradual crescendo reflecting the meaning of the words. At the musical and spiritual climax the full organ sounds four chords which represent The Four Angels beforethe Throne of God. The final chord then transforms into the sacred monosyllable OM which hums around the building representing the Peace and Beatitude of God’s Presence. Duration: c. 4 minutes

Orchestration. This gospel-flavored musical reflects on the promise of peace delivered by the angels on the night of Jesus' birth. The iconic ballad, "Let There Be Peace on Earth" is used as musical bookends: its theme is briefly stated in the second movement and then returns in full-blown gospel style at the end to provide an emotion-filled climax. In between, the Christmas story is told through scriptural narration and six beloved carols set in a variety of styles ranging from jazz, to gospel, to calypso. Accompaniment can be provided by piano, full orchestra, or a smaller set of rhythm parts, arranged by Ed Hogan. Performance time is 35 minutes.
