The second half of the 18th century, for the people of East Central Europe, was the time of the awakening of national consciousness. The leading force in the Hungarian enlightenment, the lesser nobility, also regarded as important the national character of the country's culture. A valuable kind of national music was the Hungarian dance music that flourished in the 18th century. The greater part of the repertoire naturally perpetuates the 'Hungarian-style' pieces from the previous centuries (appearing in foreign collections too described as hungaricus, ungaresca, saltus hungaricus or Ungarischer Tanz), but beside these we can encounter contemporary European dances and entertaining instrumental pieces in almost every style. The majority of the sources are collections compiled by non-professional musicians and intendedfor private music-making. In this work the composer uses melodies from the 18th-century Linus dance collection, in trioform, with harmonies and bass appropriate to that period. The musical fabric is rich in counterparts, the sound is mademore colourful with many kinds of percussion instruments. The register and rhythmic simplicity of the parts make thepieces easily playable even by music school pupils.picc, 8 fl, 2 ob, 2 fg, 4 cl1 Bb, 4 cl2 Bb, 4 cl3 Bb, 2 cl b Bb, sax a1 Eb, sax a2 Eb, 2 sax t Bb, sax bar Eb - 4 tr1 Bb, 4 tr2 Bb, 4 cor, 4 trb, 2 flic t Bb/C, 4 tb - timp, 4 perc (glsp, xyl, 5 t bl, 2 bongos, cast, ptto sosp, cow bell, trgl, gr c, tamb b).

A relentless 6/8 accompaniment drives this piece forward with exciting momentum. Two-against-three rhythm patterns add urgency to the theme, requiring precision in counting and maintaining an even tempo. Intensity builds like the first piercing light on the morning horizon, flourishing toward a stately middle section that reflects the grandeur of glorious colors and spacious skies. Players with the melody should take care to sustain with a warm, ringing tone. The pizzicato accompaniment should also stay unrushed and steady. The following restatement of the fast opening theme soars to a triumphant finale.

Composer/arr anger Sean O'Loughlin has provided a refreshing new setting of our National Anthem. It was originally written for orchestral brass and percussion and has been performed at both MLB and NBA events. The arrangement begins with a bold fanfare to set the tone, but also to provide the motive glue to hold the arrangement together and create something unique. Creative harmonic usage and colorful orchestration really make this version stand out from the rest. There have been many great arrangements of our National Anthem throughout the years . The responsibility of creating one that truly brought something new to the mix was very daunting . I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to write this version for the Oregon Symphony Brass Section to perform at the Portland Trail Blazers NBA games . Subsequent performances have occurred with the Baltimore Symphony at the Baltimore Orioles MLB games . At this time, it is my supreme honor to adapt this for the advanced concert band .In bringing something new, I decided to start with a bold fanfare to set the tone for this great music . Introducing some more dissonant harmonies also created a more intense feel .The first stanza includes a flowing counter line in the horns and alto saxophones . The trumpets interject some flourishes on the second pass to further the intensity . These flourishes continue “ . . . when the rockets red glare!†The final push at m . 29 is colored with pulsating 16th notes in the woodwinds that lead to some dramatic harmony at the fermata in m . 32 . The opening fanfare then returns to let everyone know that it's time to “Play ball!â€.

DUOâ €™s succinct movement titles (I. Here, II. Open, III. Stark, IV. Ardent) tease at revealing the grand and heartfelt inspiration for exuberant romanticism in this sonata-like work of symphonic proportions and depth. Charles Gibb is both an accomplished pianist and an award-winning flutist, who has written of this compelling major addition to the literature: “This work is a journey. What journey and whose journey does not matter. It is my journey, it is your journey. It is the journey of those who came before us, and of those who will come after us. I wrote this hoping that we can find each other along the road, so we can realize that we don’t need to go on the journey alone.†Gibb’s DUO is sure to become a favorite major work for flute recitalists. This work is a journey. What journey and whose journey does not matter. It is my journey, it is your journey. It is the journey of those who came before us, and of those who will come after us. I wrote this hoping that we can find each other along the road, so we can realize that we don’t need to go on the journey alone.“Here†begins with three notes that shape the rhythmic and harmonic content of the entire work. Melodies and harmonies including the tonic, dominant, and leading tone can be found in each of the four movements. The first moments of this movement introduce the melody, offering itself unencumbered and uninhibited. It shows itself as it is. The melodies soar, the harmonies become voiced more intricately, and the opening theme repeats in full grandeur. The momentum slows down, and the movement ends with a sense of completion, yet remains unbalanced.A striking piano gesture launches “Open,†the idea of instability reflected with the flowing flute trills and unclear meter patterns in the piano. The sensation of an unsteady grace in 5/8 time arrives with a piano ostinato. The melody is expressive, yet insecure and unbalanced due to changing meters. After a grand pause, the movement transitions to 4/4 time with the flute switching between duplet and triplet flourishes. After a rapid descent in the flute, the opening gesture returns, changed and abruptly interrupted. The third movement, “Stark,†is very static, beginning plainly but markedly. The falling fifth calls out continually throughout the movement, searching, lost. Melodies appear in pieces, some smooth and flowing, others rather disjunct. The piece climaxes with a line of mournfulness, yet revealing a deeper strength through intense projection of tone in the high register. However, the static harmonies return, this time unsteady all the way to its foundation. This destabilization repeats, and then quietly recedes.“Ardentâ is the longest of the movements and spans a wide range of musical emotion. Part of the movement is fast paced, energetic, and balances order and disarray. However, once the chaos dies down, a gentle, expressive theme comes in. The theme itself is very resolute; it is order appearing from the pandemonium. Conflict returns, and order and chaos become less distinguishable from one another, and soon fuse together. However, order returns with new meaning, synthesized with previous musical content, creating a truer, deeper sense of awareness or understanding. A moment of ambiguity arises, but the flute persists, supported by the sensitive but firm figuration in the piano, and resoundingly comes to a close, unburdened and at ease.

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The â??Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacherâ?? faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!1834 - Machara Impressions was a commission for the 175th anniversary of the band Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher from the town of Grevenmacher - formerly Machara - in Luxemburg. It is a work of many contrasts with alternating peace and excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages - reflecting the peaceful and turbulent history of the band.

Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.

Ready for some musical shock and awe? Play on words aside, this is an excellent way to feature your entire woodwind section in a way that doesn’t ignore the rest of the band. A brief, ominous march soon gives way to a raucous display of fast trills and flourishes that show off what these instruments can do (even the bass woodwinds). Highly effective for all serious and light concert environments!

Robert Levin's brilliant and inspired recording (with Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music) and Breitkopf's new edition have two things in common: their historically well-founded approach and the editorial team consisting of Robert Levin and Cliff Eisen. Here, Urtext signifies an eschewal of a final version that never existed and that Mozart himself had never even envisaged. On the contrary, Levin and Eisen pursue an editorial philosophy tailored to Mozart and his music: Standardization is the greatest aesthetic threat in the performance of Mozarts concertos. To prepare the score of the new edition, the editors were able to consult the autograph, located in Krakow, for the very first time. The new edition clearly incorporates a much broader base of findings than any previous edition, including the NMA. At the same time, the score and piano reduction offer a wealth of additional information on performance practice gleaned from further authentic sources, including observations on continuo practice, instruments, size and disposition of the orchestra, ornaments, tempo and character, cadenzas and flourishes.

Bull City Fanfare was composed for my friend Thomas Shaffer and the Durham Community Concert Band. It is an exciting opener (or closer) that is easily accessible to most young high school bands. Bull City is the nickname for Durham, North Carolina as you may remember from the baseball movie, Bull Durham. The city was given that moniker in the late 1800s when the Blackwell Tobacco Company named its product “Bull†Durham Tobacco. Tobacco was king in Durham for quite awhile. The Durham Community Concert Band has been operating for forty years. It is a great organization and flourishes with well over 100 members of all ages. This piece should be played with a steady tempo throughout, ideally at the indicated metronome marking of 144. Any dragging of tempo will result in the piece losing its energy. The tambourine part may be played with two hands or sticks if necessary with the instrument on a table or snare drum, and the conga part should be very prominent.Exaggerate the dynamics: play the pianos soft and pay attention to marked crescendos. But this piece is not for the timid: play the fortes and fortissimos with gusto. Have fun!

An exceptional new composition based upon the hymn Converse (commonly known as What a Friend We Have in Jesus), William Harbinson has crafted a concert overture using the hymn's theme as a starting point. Beginning with brilliant brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, the middle section is made up of an inversion of the hymn tune, and ends with a dramatic climax. This work is simply beautiful and heartfelt; showcasing your group's musical expression like no other.

This piece drives from the start with bold trumpet flourishes and interjections from the rest of the band. After the exciting first section, a lyrical second theme departs to something beautiful and lush in harmonic structure. The development section is based on the opening theme, eventually leading the piece back, followed by a dynamic brass flourish in the coda. A solid choice by a known composer for contests and festivals.
