Not being able to read music is no obstacle and Gitika's tips and the original arrangements included here demonstrate just how rewarding and inclusive teaching a cappella by ear and gesture can be!Gitika Partington is a singer/songwriter vocal arranger teacher and choral director. She has an MA in choral education and holds many other musical qualifications. Sheruns regular 'popular and world style' singing workshops as well as national training sessions for adults and children. In addition she runs three adult community choirs where all the music is learned by ear and is mostly self arranged. One of Gitika's major loves is a cappella vocal arranging which she does for her three choirs and her vocal workshops. Her arrangements are used by youth and community choirs across the UK and internationally. This book contains the first of many of her arrangements she would like to share even more widely. She is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioner Network an organisation that believes in singing as a spontaneous way of expressing joy celebration and grief and as a medium for binding communities together. Gitika shares the network's belief that singing together should be available to all and is not about having 'a good voice'. All of her groups are non-audition and open to anyone who wants to sing.

One of the major institutions of sacred music, the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica, can look back on a five-hundred-year history. Now Giancarlo Rostirolla brings this turbulent and spellbinding history to life using original documents from the Papal Library and the chapter archives of Saint Peter in the Vatican. The Cappella Giulia was founded by Pope Julius II in 1513. Its chapel masters were the most important representatives of Roman vocal polyphony, above all Giovanni Animuccia and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francesco Soriano, Virgilio Mazzocchi, Orazio Benevoli, Paolo Lorenzani and Pietro Bencini. Also employed there were such opera composers as Domenico Scarlatti, Niccolò Jommelli and Nicola Zingarelli, the proponents of Italian Cecilianism up to Armando Renzi, and such renowned organists as Girolamo Frescobaldi. In this documentary history, as comprehensive as it is exciting to read, Giancarlo Rostirolla pays tribute to the Cappella Giulia as a musical institution of extraordinary historical importance and the vehicle for half a millennium of sacred music. For decades the author, an internationally acclaimed authority on Rome's musical traditions, has immersed himself like few others in the church and chapel archives, libraries and music collections of the Eternal City.– For the first time these two volumes explore the history of the Cappella Giulia with information on all the musicians known to have worked there, together with their biographies, lists of compositions and documents on the chapel's history.

Zolt ¡n Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.

The choirbook Women of Our World is more than a simple song collection: In easy two- to three-part arrangements for women's voices, 40 pieces in 25 different languages from more than 30 countries are gathered here. Singable transcriptions for each piece as well as pronunciation guides and translations in the appendix enable an immediate access. Introductory texts inform on the origin and cultural background of the songs; chord symbols allow an instrumental accompaniment, too. Unique for choirbooks of this kind though are the contributions from women of international origin living in Germany; they are presented in portraits and describe their personal relation to singing in a choir. Women of Our World is the result of the yearslong work of editor Hayat Chaoui with international song repertoire as choir leader, singer and consultant. An interview with Mrs. Chaoui on the origin of the edition is found on our blog (German only). This praiseworthy resource could be used to support a range of choral projects, especially perhaps where songs might usefully be taught by rote. Palestrina' s Missa Paternoster is one of the masses by this composer that were published neither during his lifetime nor after his death. The work has come down to us in one single manuscript source from the collections of the Cappella Sistina in Rome, a copy transcribed by D. Brancadore in 1618.The mass is written on motifs from the ancient plainchant Pater noster melody from the mass liturgy, which underlays the movements in an admirable multiplicity of melodic forms. New counterpoints are repeatedly intertwined with the themes of the title melody over the course of the mass. Certain idiosyncrasies in the voice-leading and the austere sonorities that recall the late Netherlandish tradition give rise to the hypothesis that this is a relatively early work of Palestrina.Several decades ago, the Missa Paternoster was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in a performance edition prepared by Hermann Bauerle. The present edition is based on the copy of the work printed in the Choirbook 68 (Cappella Sistina) of the Biblioteca Vaticana in Rome. The poor condition of the source made it necessary to compare it with Haberl's Complete Edition as weil, after which two errors have to be corrected. Our edition cannot pretend to offer a definitive reading of the accidentals, since they are difficult to distinguish in the original. The work was transposed, as this seemed more appropriate to present-day choral practice. Finally, the note values were reduced by a half and the closing notes reproduced uniforrnly as longae. Palestrina's Missa ,,Pater noster occupies a distinguished position next to its better known, four-part fellow works. lt deserves this rank thanks to its dignified and broadly sweeping themes, the archaic loftiness of its sound, and the wealth of motivic work contained within it. We sincerely hope that this new edition will stimulate choirs to turn their attention once again to this rarely sung mass by the great Roman master.Rudolf Ewerhart,January 1962, Munster (Westf.).

Barbershop singing is often thought of as a genre of music when, in fact, it is a style of arranging. Any song can be arranged in the barbershop style, provided that the arranger be familiar with the tenets of this originally American--though now global--art form. Arranging Barbershop provides this framework. It follows in the footsteps of arranging legends, both from the early days of barbershop and those since the preservationist movement, including our modern, living arrangers. All of these artists shaped barbershop to what it is today: a vibrant, unique musical experience that has the capacity to be compelling both for the singers and the eager listeners. This book is intended to empower current and future generations of barbershop arrangers of all skill levels, providing them the tools and knowledge they need to bring their creations to life. Arranging Barbershop is divided into four volumes: 1) Getting Started, 2) The Arranging Journey, 3) Visions of Excellence, and 4) Learn from the Experts. Each volume is meant to be standalone but also a part of the greater whole: ⢠Vol. 1, âGetting Started,â provides foundational tools and approaches for the budding arranger. ⢠Vol. 2, âThe Arranging Journey,â seeks to provide guidance for arrangers at three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. 714 pages! Vol. 3, âVisions of Excellence,â is a virtual roundtable with 38 of barbershop's greatest arrangers. ⢠Vol. 4, âLearn from the Experts,â contains two parts: Arranging in Action--dozens of hours of videos, with arrangers discussing and deconstructing their works; Arrangers' Toolbox-deep dive chapters on specialized topics by top arrangers Filled with case studies, specific examples (with audio and video clips) and lessons learned, each volume aims to unlock new skills and expertise for everyone interested in arranging barbershop!

Volume II of the collected edition of the choral works of Veress contains seven Hungarian folksong cycles or cantatas, a choral poem in Hungarian and a choral cycle in English. In his first creative period (1929-1939), which he spent in Hungary, Sándor Veress's direct involvement in Hungarian folk music research played a decisive part: his folksong experience gained through personal collecting work found expression in his first period of composition for mixed choir. In the course of the 1960s, after his emigration, he returned on two occasions to the a cappella mixed choir genre: in 1962 he wrote a piece for mixed choir to mark the 60th birthday of the great Hungarian poet GyulaIllyés (Óda Európához - Ode to Europe, based on the poem by Illyés), and in 1967, at the request of the Australian Radio Company, he composed for the 'Adelaide Singers' chamber choir Songs of the Seasons, a seven-movement madrigal cycle making exceptional demands on the performers, to verses by the Australian poet Christopher Brennan (1870-1932).

With the publication of the first collective, scholarly edition of the a cappella works of Sándor Veress (1907-1992), the publishers were paying a long-standing debt in the Veress centenary year. Volume I contains all the already published works for children s, female and male choirs, together with those of the works of his mature period preserved in manuscript which have attained their definitive form: seven choral cycles or suites, and five single-movement works. The musical concept of the mainly 3- or 4-movement Hungarian folksong suites and cantatas is closely akin to that of the composer s instrumental folksong series written at the same time. Also included in thevolume are a musical setting of Sándor Pet fi s poem Orbán and arrangements of two Swiss folksongs and a children s song of American origin (Mary had a little lamb).

'This collection which comprises 143 choral works in 13 languages has been brought forth by the need of the Hungarian choirs for such publications. It leaves no doubt that it is but a drop in the sea even if it covers a period of two and a half millenia, works from an ode of the Hellenic Pyndar to present day compositions. The pleasure in singing together must reach back to older times yet, perhaps to the beginning of human existence. The earliest traces of polyphony can be come upon in the 9-10th centuries. The present compendium that concentrates on the golden age of choir music, the Renaissance derives its title from this period...' Miklos Forrai.
