LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) Back to School 2015 From PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES by Joe Procopio LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) is a delightful Latin flavored dance that was inspired by Little Miss Lilly who could tumble on command all by her big self when she was only 15 months old. When I first saw her dance and tumble at such a young age, I was so moved that I wrote this piece to celebrate her ability to amaze everyone with her dancing and tumbling. LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) was originally written and arranged for a small ensemble, band, stage band or combo with flexible instrumentation so that it may be performed with only two Saxophones (Alto Sax I and Alto Sax II) and a standard backup with Piano/Keyboard, Guitar, Bass and Drums. In addition, any combo may be augmented by adding any or all of the parts included for Flute, Clarinet, Tenor Sax, and Baritone Sax. This flexible or variable instrumentation of LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) makes it unique and perfect for schools and colleges that do not have a permanent roster of music students entering their music programs annually. It also eases the burden for Directors searching for good music to perform for groups with ever changing numbers of music students. What’s more, LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) has a section open for solos to enable the ensemble to feature players who can improvise well enhancing not only the group’s enjoyment but also everyone’s listening pleasure. This piece is composed in the same style of the other dances in the set - all of which have been performed by College and High School students in many major concert events along the East Coast with great success. It is published separately and in a set entitled PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES PART 1 from the sets PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES Part I and Part II. Each Part contains 3 Dances. When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?†The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.

It was premièred at the Circle Theatre in Chicago on April 11, 1993 with the Composer as Faust and Kevin Hinton, pianistâ??Henry Faustâ? started out as a thought about the â??essenceâ? of opera. Isaacs thought that one singer, one piano, and a black box theater were all that was really needed to achieve â??opera-nessâ?. Goetheâ??s play, â??Faust,â? immediately came to mind. The tale of the professor who makes a deal with the devil for infinite knowledge and the restoration of youth, only to betray himself by lust, seemed perfect. The three-act opera is for tenor and piano and in a Goethe-era English translation by Anna Swanwick. She was the leading translator of Goethe of her day and one of the first advocates for womenâ??s rights. Every word Faust sings is a line from the play.The opera is set in a miserable single-occupancy hotel room furnished with an iron cot, a beat-up dresser and a tattered arm chair. Faust, disheveled and in his pajamas, lives out the drama. The ensuing events, the feverish creations of an addled brain, are all real to Faust. He sees and interacts with the other two characters â?? the devil and Gretchen â?? and flies to hell to dance at the Witches Sabbath. Both the tenor and piano parts are equally demanding and require artists of the first order. The tenor part covers a great range â?? both vocally and dramatically. An Avaloch Divertimento was begun-in fact the first two movements were completed-at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire. Avaloch or Abhlach, is from the old Irish word meaning, place of the apple trees. The sacred Isle of the Apple Trees, Avalon-where Arthur, King of the Britons, was taken to be healed of his dreadful wounds-takes its name from this ancient word. Avaloch Farm Music Institute (AFMI) in New Hampshire is also a magical place where chamber music groups come to work and create in an atmosphere free from the distractions of everyday life. In the summer of 2021 I had the pleasure and honor of being a resident of AFMI along with Areli Mendoza-Pannone, Robert Frazier, and Mark Evans as we work-shopped my song cycle, Quarry Songs. Areli, Bobby, and Mark had to go back to the real world half way through the residency, leaving me at AFMI to begin work on An Avaloch Divertimento. The first movement is an Aubade, which are traditionally morning love songs-as opposed to evening love songs or serenades. In the seventeenth century aubades became associated with instrumental works depicting sunrises. It is this sense of the word that is used here, complete with a bird-song oboe cadenza. Pippin takes its name from a variety of apple. While at AFMI I would take afternoon walks through the nearby apple orchard to beautiful Walker Pond. It was on one of these walks that I came up with the first draft of the tune used in the central fughetta of the movement. The word, pippin is also included in Carolyn Forché’s poem, The Museum of Stones, which I had set as the final movement of Quarry Songs. The final movement, Amhrán, means song in Irish and is a simple song form with three interwoven themes that emulate the Irish Bodhran (frame drum), fiddle, and singer. A suite of short pieces for solo guitar intended to capture a unique yet popular idiosyncratic sound. Some of these are new works, some have been re-worked from older ideas. They all incorporate the idea of popular rock style guitar music being combined with standard classical guitar technique and notation.Andante Tremolo creates an eerie yet nostalgic mood with a sixteenth note tremolo figure at the beginning that bursts into a middle section utilizing pull offs to open strings and a more rapid tremolo. It features a descending melodic figure that leads to nowhere... Anniversary Theme is a half-remembered hum-along melody at the end of the formal celebration when the chairs are being put away but the decorations are still up. It uses simple harmonies that don't really make sense but just follow that same half-forgotten melody, cadencing here and there when they feel like it. Cloudburst Arpeggio focuses on the chime-like campanella effect produced by a descending slur pulled-off to an open string, and then hammering it back on again. It begins with a straight-ahead arpeggio pattern going through a standard chord change, and then jumps off the edge of the cliff into other areas...Mobile is a perpetual motion machine that rocks its way into an Arabic sounding riff in the middle. The low D tuning allows utilization of a drone on the high open D string that produces interesting sonic effects allowing for unique sounds to pull off to open strings.

Experiencing High Volumes (2014) triet 6 minutes Composed for the Severnside Composers Alliance’s second Three is the Magic Number concerts of contemporary piano triets at the Lantern, Colston Hall, Bristol in 2014, performed by Milena Zhivotovskaya, Rob Broomfield and John Pitts. This is pleasant, relaxing armchair music, which doesn’t actually get particularly loud. I have Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) to thank for a motif that recurs through the piece – a short section of his Gran Vals, which you may recognise. I have omitted the last note of the original melody, which is actually an octave down from a more familiar version you may know. Before this motif made its way into this piece I had considered a title along the lines of Cycle of Thirds for harmonic reasons which may be obvious. But I put that idea permanently on hold after trying to get through to a utilities company. In retrospect, I should have ensured that the end looped neatly back to the beginning (which sadly it doesn’t quite), so that I could attempt to sell a recording of this piece to businesses for their call waiting music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4MDdZpWQNA

Concertino for Tuba was written in 2016 as a piano transcription to both the versions for band and orchestra, composed in 2003 and 2005, respectively. The duration is 13 minutes. The band version is grade 4 with the solo tuba grade 5. The solo tuba and band orchestration was adapted from Concertino for Euphonium and Band commissioned by the United States Army Band ?Pershing?s Own? in 1995. In 2002 Gary Bird asked me to compose a piece for him with band that was to be premiered by the Volga Band of Saratov, Russia conducted by Mary Ann Craig in 2004. Gary knew several of my compositions and asked me to compose a piece similar my Concertino for Euphonium and Band that was composed for Bob Powers and the United States Army Band. In 2004 Gary told my that he would be playing a solo with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and asked me to do a version for symphony orchestra. It was premiered by the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra; Istvan Jaray, Conductor in 2006. The orchestral version was recorded by Gary Bird and the Oak Grove Symphony Orchestra; Jack Stamp, Conducting. It is on the CD Tuba Safari on Albany Records. The band version was recorded by Gary Bird and the IUP Wind Ensemble; Jack Stamp, Conducting. Concertino for Tuba and Orchestra was a Semi Finalist Winner in the American Prize Composition Competition ? Orchestra Division in 2017, the only concerto awarded a prize in the Orchestra Division that year.
Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition and tuba instructor, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1st WASBE (World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) International Composition Contest 2017, First Prize Winner of the Rene Fisher Composition Prize, First Prize Winner in the Concurso Bienal de Composicin de Musica para Banda, Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), Menzione d?Onore (highest award given) of the Mario Bernardo Angelo-Comneno International Music Competition by the Accademia Angelica Costantiniana Arti E Scienze (Italy), First Prize in the 1991 TUBA International Etude Composition Competition and several others. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world.
Gregory Fritze is also a very active tubist. He was Principal Tubist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic for thirty-three years as well as performing with many other ensembles in New England and Florida.
He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanish composers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize.
He has thirty-four compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.
