A fun book for beginner violinists which concentrates on both aspects of violin playing - pizzicato and bowing. The volume can be used as a solo or a duet book and combines both techniques in an imaginative and enjoyable way.

Essays by Gregory Barnett, Barra Boydell, Enrico Careri, Cheryll Duncan, Christopher Hogwood, Peter Holman, Clare Hornsby, Mark Kroll, Sandra Mangsen, Andrew Pink, Rudolf Rasch, Robin Stowell, Michael Talbot, Wiebke Thormahlen, Peter Walls, Neal ZaslawSixteen essays by international scholars celebrate the 250th anniversary of Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), star pupil of Corelli and composer, performer and teacher in Paris, London and Dublin, who for many years was ranked as the equal of Handel. His compositions moved far beyond Corelli's model (to include theatre music, sonatas for cello and keyboard works) and later in his life he supported his aesthetic style with treatises on violin and guitar playing, good taste, accompaniment and composition. He published all his output in the most elegant style via engravers and music sellers in Paris, Amsterdam and London, and constantly revised and rewrote earlier works in new and often expanded formats. This legacy is analysed and placed in context within the various national styles current in Europe, and the enormous influence of his treatise The Art of Playing on the Violin is positioned in a continuum which extends to Ivan Galamian.Outside music these studies examine the effect of Freemasonry on Geminiani's career, and his frequent recourse to law to defend his rights. On his own admission, Geminiani preferred dealing in fine art to playing the violin -- a claim always derided by earlier writers, but in fact easily defended by newly available evidence of his highly successful sales. The reception of Geminiani's music is also re-assessed and his apparent decline in public favour is explained; many new sources contradict the accepted and dismissive opinions of Charles Burney and John Hawkins, and the supportive enthusiasm of his main British advocate, Charles Avison, is given its rightful position. Questions of present-day performance values are also contrasted with Geminiani's philosophy, and many leads presented for the future investigation of this enigmatic but individual genius.

Laure n Bernofsky wants young string players to love playing music, from the very beginning of their studies. Therefore, she likes writing early-level pieces that are fun, yet pedagogically helpful. On a Swing is played on only open strings, so students can focus on their bow holds and bowing without having to think about left-hand fingers. The piece gets its harmonic and rhythmic interest from the piano part. This work is dedicated to Sandy Mutchler, who fondly remembers her dear friend, the strings pedagogue Linda Luebke. The title and feel of the piece reflect the times they spent together on a porch swing. The back-and-forth motion of the swing is imitated in the up-and-down bows. Students should think of a relaxed, swinging motion with their bodies as they play this piece.Lauren Bernofsky wants young string players to love playing music, from the very beginning of their studies. The present DVD brings together the recordings of two of Helmut Lachenmann's orchestral works that originated far apart in time, but are similar in their small-scale scoring (strings and 3 grand pianos or just strings): Klangschatten - mein Saitenspiel (1972) and Double (Grido II) (2004). We filmed Double in May 2016 with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrucken Kaiserslautern under the musical direction of Peter Hirsch, who has long been collaborating with the composer. Two films have been created from the sectional rehearsals of several hours in length (Sectional rehearsal violins/ Sectional rehearsal violas, cellos, double basses) in which, among other things, Lachenmann explains in detail and demonstrates the relevant playing techniques. Our camera could accompany the rehearsals of Klangschatten - mein Saitenspiel (SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden and Freiburg, conductor: Pascal Rophe) for only a few hours. The result is two shorter rehearsal films, giving nonetheless a good insight into the piece that Lachenmann describes as one of his favorites among his own works. (Wiebke Popel)In 2015/16 I travelled across Europe with cameraman Michael Zimmer to document a total of nine orchestral rehearsals of and with [meaning rehearsals of music by HL, conducted by HL? OR?] Helmut Lachenmann in the course of Lachenmann Perspectives, a project of the Musik der Jahrhunderte. This DVD series is the filmic result of these journeys.
