This volume continues the reordering of the Society's edition of Purcell's anthems, under which all the large-scale verse anthems with strings will be found in Volumes 13 (in preparation) and 14 and 17 (already published); all the verse anthems with organ in Volumes 28 (in preparation) and 29; and the stile antico anthems and the Latin motets in Volume 32 (in preparation). All eleven pieces in the present volume were probably composed for the Chapel Royal, and all appear to belong to Purcell's later years. Four of them are explicitly dated - the earliest 1687 - in an authoritative source which was not available to previous editors of the music: a score-book in the hand of the celebrated bass singer John Gostling, whose cavernous low register Purcell exploited for its dramatic effect in some of his finest compositions for the Chapel.

The composition of Anglican church music was never one of Byrd's priorities, but his anthems on English texts remained in favour long after his death, and for two centuries were the works by which his name was remembered. Full and verse anthems are included in this volume, with anthems from secular sources and fragmentary and doubtful works also collected.

Tall is's choral works with English texts were all written for the worship of God in the reformed Church of England, setting either the liturgy of the new Book of Common Prayer of 1549, or Coverdale's vernacular bible. They testify to his position, undisputed even in his lifetime, as 'the father of English church music'. This volume contains ten of the 11 anthems that can definitely be attributed to the composer, and five contrafacta anthems with Latin texts, which were published in Tallis and Byrd's Cantiones Sacrae of 1575.

The third and final volume devoted to the anthems of S. S. Wesley completes the canon with 23 original works written in the period between his departure from Exeter Cathedral to become organist of Leeds parish church in 1842 and 1874, the likely date of his final essays in the genre. Moving towards a greater simplicity of style, with less counterpoint and dissonance, but emphasising elements of colour, timbre and texture, these works are in general conceived on a more modest scale than earlier pieces such as The Wilderness. Even so, they show the composer continuing to experiment with the Anglican verse anthem, the evolution of which had been the cornerstone of a creative achievement without equal in the history of the English cathedral tradition between Purcell and Stanford.

Will iam Croft's career as the leading native-born composer of English church music was established in the period between the death of Purcell and the arrival of Handel in London. His education took place among musicians from Purcell's circle, and his style was modified by the influence of Handel's 'Utrecht' Te Deum and Jubilate of 1713. All the music in this volume was composed for various royal church services that took place between 1709 and 1720, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace and in St Paul's Cathedral. The contents include the Te Deum and Jubilate Deo, sung at the coronation of George I, and the anthems The Lord is a sun and a shield, O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his name, O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious, and Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The form and style of the verse anthem were anticipated in the work of a number of 16th-century composers. However, it was only in the hands of Orlando Gibbons, one of the earliest musicians to write exclusively for the English rite, that it achieved new flexibility with the use of declamatory style in the verse sections. This first volume of his music contains 16 anthems, including See, see, the Word is incarnate and This is the record of John.

Noted composer M. Roger Holland has taken antiphons from the 2010 Roman Missal and paired them with psalm verses, creating compositions that have wide use in the liturgy. Some parishes will want to use these pieces on the appointed day for entrance or communion processionals. Others may find use for them throughout the entire year, perhaps using them as a weekly song through the season. The songs work well as stand-alone processional pieces and many choirs will want to use them as choir anthems or congregational songs during the preparation of the gifts and altar. While utilizing official texts of the Roman rite, they can be used by congregations of any denomination. Roger explores the wide breadth that is African American music, you’ll find lyric ballades, spiritualinspired offerings, gospel-style songs, and pieces with a more uptempo feel. This is the fourth volume in this series. Contains: O Sing a New Song • God Is Love • Behold Emmanuel • Communion Song For cantor or soloist.
