This collection is for classical Cellists and presents a broad selection of well-known pieces from the repertoire of classical music, opera, musicals, jazz and tunes from all over the world for all occasions, from solemn ceremonies to happy celebrations. This includes performances as part of public or private ceremonies to mark birthdays, weddings, funerals, anniversaries and jubilee celebrations as well as concerts in schools. The selection ranges from popular classical works such as Bach's 'Air', Mozart's 'Little Night Music' or Schumann's 'Reverie' and well-known operatic melodies through to medleys featuring waltzes, Dixieland or folk songs through to tangos and a few jazz standards. (Four Cities)-Faz'l Say?s ?Four Cities? Sonata can be considered as a journey through four cities of Anatolia. This work has taken its inspiration from Faz'l Say?s memories and events of his life. Bodrum is well known as a city greatly frequented by tourists which sets it apart from the other three locations. These four very different cities with their individual cultures have been selected from the nearly 2000-km wide expanse of Anatolia. SivasSivas is a conservative city located in Eastern Anatolia which is known for its large Alevi population. As¸'k Veysel is an Alevi Ozan (poet) and Faz'l Say has been inspired by his song ?Saz'm? (my saz/myinstrument) in the first part of this work. The movement is concluded on a melancholy tone in imitation of this ethnic instrument. HopaA traditional wedding provided Faz'l Say with his inspiration for this second movement which embraces Eastern Black Sea culture. Horon is a very fast folk dance in 7/16 time which is played on the kemence a typical instrument of the Eastern Black Sea region. The music also touches on Caucasian Georgian and Laz dances anonymous songs ?Laz women? and ?Cilveloy nanayda? (a Turkish song). AnkaraAnkara was declared the capital city of Turkey by Atatürk in 1923. This city with its population of four million was where the composer was born and also spent his childhood. ?Ankara?n'n Tas¸'na Bak? a rebellious song dating back to the First World War can be discerned in the mournful middle section. The movement with its atmosphere of tragedy evokes the republican spirit and the ambience of former times. BodrumBodrum is universally known as the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. A famous street in the city is fringed with countless bars and pubs from which a cacophony of different music can be heard ranging from jazz pop and rock to folk songs. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the ?École de Paris?. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the ?Association of Young Polish Musicians?, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de l?Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore ? homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak?s enchanting drama music.
