This tenor sax feature requires the background volume to stay comfortable under the soloist. Save the volume for measure 28, and also the big build up at measure 49 to make for an interesting ending. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued.

Approached with a stylistic lightness that should be well articulated, the strength and appeal of this setting comes from striking contrasts in dynamics and color -- one minute it's soft and subdued, and the next it explodes with volume and intensity. According to Sammy Nestico's score notes, maintaining a steady pulse from start to finish is the greatest challenge.

Obtaining a good blend is always difficult with an open sax voicing such as the one in measure 73it may take several attempts to achieve this. This arrangement also uses the voicing of 1st Alto Sax in prime unison with 1st Trumpet during ensemble sections. As for dynamics, remember to increase volume when ascending the scale and decrease it when descending the scale.

The lines of this arrangement are divided contrapuntally into two sections -- trumpets/altos and trombones/tenors. These lines should be played in a relaxed fashion at a mezzo forte volume, with short quarter notes throughout. At the ensemble chorus at measure 69, strive for good balance and a very full, well-supported sound.

In this beautiful showcase for alto saxophone, the overall performance can be loose but must convey great warmth. Brass section volume during background passages should be kept to a minimum. The pyramids in the introduction and at measure 37 will need to be more pronounced.

Recorded by Count Basie & His Orchestra in the late 1960's, this classic blues for developing ensembles features written or ad lib solos for trombone and drums. Midway through, shortly after the trombone solo ends, the full band gradually builds intensity and volume before launching into a roaring shout that'll blow your audience away. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued.

From the first note to the last, solo oboe carries the day in this beautiful bossa nova setting of the famous Christmas season classic. Though some brief ad-lib opportunities are given, written solo lines are provided throughout. When everyone pays special attention to subtleties in phrasing and volume (the band must not overpower the soloist), the results will be very rewarding.
