Marty Haugen’s musical, That You May Have Life, proclaims the Gospel of John through song. An eclectic array of musical styles sets the stage for each chapter, bringing the emotion of the characters to life. Musical selections range from beautiful melodic ballads to lush choral harmonies. Haugen incorporates narration, sung dialogue, and song in a way that conveys more than just the biblical texts. This musical includes such familiar narratives as the woman at the well, the raising of Lazarus, and the washing of the feet at the Last Supper. The depth and breadth of each tale blooms forth, enticing us into a personal relationship with these familiar biblical figures. That You May Have Life sings these stories “that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah and that through believing you may have life in his name.” Alto Flute, English Horn and B-flat Clarinet parts are optional Guitar part is for both acoustic and electric Keyboard is for both piano and synthesizer A portion of the prologue is in Greek. A pronunciation guide is available in this edition.

I suppose as artists we are always searching for metaphors that speak directly to the musics we perform to guide us and inspire. The music on this CD pushes our boundaries of what could be considered normal music making and instead moves us into sound worlds that expand what a choral ensemble can produce. This recording, which documents an almost three-year exploration into improvisation in various forms, contains works for choral ensembles that create new sound worlds in and of themselves. We are happy to present to the world a young composer from our midst, Sam Scheibe. His virtuous setting of O magnum mysterium introduces a gifted and deeply insightful compositional voice. Sanctitude is an expansive improvisation combining choir, soprano saxophone, Gregorian chant, Arabic chant, and melodies into a sound world that I hope will document the frontier of a new world of choral performance. The techniques employed in this improvisation are documented in the new text Discovering Choral Improvisation through Chant (GIA, 2020). The CD opens with a three-movement work, The Dreams That Remain by Thomas LaVoy, yet another composer from the Williamson Voices family who has adapted the sound world of this ensemble into a work of beauty and honesty. All of the works on this CD create Auroras of their own that touch us deeply and cover our senses with streamers of light. I thank my friend, James Whitbourn, for conducting on three of the tracks and for crafting the Sanctitude improvisation. Hopefully the sounds on this CD will, as Makoto Fujimara says, bring you outside of yourself, and pull you to look at the [life's] horizon and to see beyond. — James Jordan .

How many times I have overheard a colleague say, ‘I could create a performance like that if I had those voices.’ Maybe so, but here is a book that will help you build healthy technique and ravishing tone that is responsive to the emotional content of the words being sung. —Ann Howard Jones, from the Foreword How do text and music intertwine to build true artistry in choral performance? In Becoming the Choral Poet, esteemed conductor and teacher Jerry McCoy shares how choral conductors can guide their ensembles to deeper artistic expression through an understanding of and commitment to the poetic expression and emotional content of the words they sing. McCoy shows how the poetic elements of a text—punctuation, assonance, onomatopoeia, mood, inflection—inform a host of musical decisions, including dynamics, phrasing, tempo, and color. He follows with guidance for developing an interpretative analysis of a work, using beautiful literature as examples. Central to the book is a chapter on the choral poet’s “mechanics,” or their attributes, skills, and procedures. McCoy addresses a range of topics: Personal and professional characteristics of conductors Auditions Rhythmic integrity Creative seating charts and their uses Rehearsal considerations Characteristics of powerful programming Conducting gestures to build vocal color and expressive shapes Exercises to refine tuning and rhythmic skills The book’s final chapter presents a collection of short essays from throughout McCoy’s career that aim to strengthen the conductor’s educational approaches, enhance choral performance, and broaden the cultural balance in today’s singing. Becoming the Choral Poet is the culmination of a life’s work in the choral arts. For novice and seasoned conductors alike, this book builds the conductor’s imagination, allowing them to paint with the brush of their singers in rehearsals and concerts that are vocally, artistically, and creatively inspired. Dr. Jerry McCoy is Regents Professor of Music Emeritus for the University of North Texas (UNT), where from 2000–2015 he led the choral program to national and international acclaim while serving as Director of Choral Studies and Conductor of the A Cappella Choir.

The purpose of Arioso, one of the eight parts of John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music curriculum, is to provide children with the opportunity to spontaneously create their own tunes. To do this, the catalyst must be inviting and accessible. The opera Hansel and Gretel provides the perfect opportunity while also introducing students, even very young ones, to the wonderful world of opera. In addition to creating Arioso, children will be able to sing some of the more accessible songs. This opera comes to life when children are invited to actively participate, to become each character and sing their songs, and to create Arioso to convey their thoughts and feelings. Lillie Feierabend has presented Hansel and Gretel for over twenty years to the delight of her entire school community. Join her as she guides the first, second, and third grade students of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir as they sing songs from the opera and create Arioso for each character. Also included on this DVD: A voiceover track with John and Lillie Feierabend discussing the songs and Arioso opportunities in each scene Complete storyline with ideas for implementation Parent engagement as they interact and create Arioso with their children Lillie Feierabend is known for her work with young children and instilling a love of music within them. She has been a general music teacher in Connecticut for thirty years and a director of the Connecticut Children’s Chorus for seventeen. She is a frequent clinician at local, state, national, and international conferences, speaking on many aspects of early childhood music. Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading authorities on child development in music and movement. He is a Professor Emeritus and former Director of Music Education at the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School and is a past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).

Help your students Level Up! their sight-reading skills using their minds and ears, as well their voices! Level Up! is a sequential, interactive, and comprehensive resource built from the authors’ decades of research and experience teaching students of all levels and ages. Using the concept of target skills (isolated pitch and rhythm patterns), Level Up! guides students to carefully understand and analyze every new skill by difficulty. Authors Michele L. Henry and Keitha Lucas Hamann then reinforce each skill by asking students to sight-read specially sequenced practice melodies. Each of the five volumes—Foundational, Emerging, Minor, Developing, and Advanced—is designed as an interactive workbook for students to mark up, and is available in both treble clef and bass clef editions. The companion Teacher Manuals include clear instructions for how to best use the Level Up! system, outline the approach and sequencing, and provide assessments. Level Up! supports the artistic literacy goals of the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) and many state music education standards. The companion website, giamusic.com/levelup, provides even more reinforcement. The goal of Level Up! is simple: to help students become independent and confident musicians, with benefits to last a lifetime! Michele L. Henry, Ph.D. is Professor of Choral Music Education at Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Keitha Lucas Hamann, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Level Up! is the most sequential approach to the teaching of sight-reading that I’ve ever seen! Designed for use with singers at the middle school through high school levels, the methodology aligns with National Standards, UIL, and TEKS, and is range related for developing voices. Within each lesson, specific skills are targeted and the interactive approach further encourages the mastery of skills. Individual assessment is provided both for long-term and short-term goals, thus creating a complete and accessible methodology which can be used in any choral or general music classroom. —Lynne Gackle, Director of Choral Activities, Baylor University This book fills a unique niche in the field. I love that it takes the needs of developing/changing voice singers into account and that students can write in the books like a workbook as they are learning the tools for sight singing. Teachers will definitely appreciate the opportunities for assessment built into the series. —Jessica Nápoles, Associate Professor of Choral Music Education, University of North Texas As a teacher, I really do love this resource. It’s broken down in a way that makes it very easy to incorporate into my lessons, and the fact that it’s sequential and very clear about the concepts introduced at each level is extremely helpful. I can see my students (beginners especially) getting better and more confident with their sight-reading. I look forward to using this resource as our primary sight-reading resource! —Courtney Neva, Choir Director, Dripping Springs High School.

The ultimate goal of Movement Exploration, one of the eight parts of John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music curriculum, is to use the body to appropriately demonstrate the expressiveness of the music. Experiencing various movements with accompanying music helps children develop lifelong sensitivities toward the expressiveness—or the “art part”—of music. There is no better vehicle for this than Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The music and the story come alive when children are invited to actively participate, to become each character, and to respond expressively to their signature music. At the same time, each theme offers an opportunity to expand students’ creative movement vocabulary. Lillie Feierabend has presented The Nutcracker for over twenty years to the delight of her entire school community. Join her as she guides the first, second, and third grade students of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir in dancing each character and discovering the delight of moving expressively and musically to the Movement Exploration themes. Also included on this DVD: A voiceover track with John and Lillie Feierabend discussing each component of Movement Exploration Complete storyline with Movement Exploration themes and implementation ideas Parent engagement as they dance with their children Lillie Feierabend is known for her work with young children and instilling a love of music within them.
