Violin Concertos, Concerto For Two Violins Bwv 1041/1042/1043

Of the violin concertos by Belgian composer and violinist Jean Baptiste Accolay the first in A minor has become a poular audition piece under the title 'Concertino I'. This single-movement work is appealing and effective but not too difficult. As a 'student concerto' it has established itself in secondary-school teaching as well as in international competitions such as 'Jugend Musiziert' in Germany.Als „Schülerkonzert“ hat es sich im Mittelstufenunterricht wie auch bei internationalen Wettbewerben etabliert so in Deutschland bei „Jugend musiziert“.Die Violinpädagogin Franziska Matz die bereits mehrere Schülerkonzertein der Edition Peters vorgelegt hat hat ihre langjährige Unterrichtserfahrung auch in diese Ausgabe einfließen lassen. The practice of letting the soloist improvise their own Cadenza during a Concerto had almost died out by the nineteenth century since composers disliked the way performers frequently used the oppurtunity to showcase their own virtuosic talent rather than working out a cadenza which would suit the music. These four Cadenzas for Mozart Beethoven Brahms and Paganini concerti however have been carefully worked out and performed by the modern violinist Nathan Milstein. They are extremely challenging but avoid 'empty virtuosity' - they have real musical value as one would expect from one of the finest Violinsts of the Twentieth Century. They can be used for performance or as astudy aid to the art of Cadenza improvisation. All four Concertos have been recorded by Milstein.

Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting withall the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773.The Piano reduction of Mozart?s G Major Violin Concerto is easier to play uncluttered and practical with page turns where you need them and where necessary fold-out pages.The solo part gives players the critical Urtext of the New Mozart Edition. The tutti passages are all presented in normal size print for players wanting to perform these sections with the first Violins. An ossia has been included in small print for the last four measures before the first solo passage to allow for the transition to the solo section.A prepared performance part is also included with bowings fingerings and performance practice comments. We know this from at least two sets of handwritten parts which were then in circulation.No Piano part has been handed down; indeed the original sets of parts probably omitted the Piano.The soloist presumably studied his part from the first edition of the solo part published with the original performance material in 1808.
