Viola Concerto - Full Score

Full Score-Gong's Viola Concerto was premiered by the Shanghai Philharmonic with fellow Julliard graduate Liyuan Liu on viola. The work is based on J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye as part of a program addressing the emotional health of teenagers along with the composer's autobiographical 6th Symphony. Britten was so remarkably prolific as a young composer that many of the works from his teens were put aside to await revision or completion as he rushed on to the next piece. This was particularly the case around the time of hisOpus 1 Sinfonietta composed in the summer of 1932 his second year as a student at the Royal College Of Music.The Sinfonietta was written (in less than three weeks) very soon after Britten had completed thefirst draft of the Double Concerto; but after finishing the Sinfonietta he went back to revise the Concerto's second movement. He started work on his Op.2 Phantasy for Oboe and String Trio a few weekslater.Although the Concerto follows the same three-movement pattern as the Sinfonietta it is more ambitious in scale; and since the sketch is unusually for Britten complete in practically every detail it ispuzzling that he never made a full score of the work after finishing the composition and seems to have made no attempt to get it performed. It is not clear if he had particular performers in mind (he was of course a Violaplayer although he is not likely to have intended the part for himself). He showed the work to his composition teacher at the college John Ireland who as Britten recorded in his diary was 'pretty pleased' with it; but it isdistinctly possible that his experience in rehearsing the Sinfonietta with a student orchestra in 1932 ('I have never heard such an appalling row!' reads another diary entry) discouraged him from going on to complete theDouble Concerto in score. He was not to hear any of his orchestral works until the first performance of Our Hunting Fathers in 1936.In the absence of Britten's full score it was necessary for me to prepare the workfrom the sketch. But the instrumentation is so carefully indicated in the draft that the resulting score is not far from being 100% Britten - only between bars 70 and 74 of the slow movement did there seem to be any need to add

In 1738 JohannPhilipp Eisel already wrote of the Viola as being the ?very bowels of music? and stressed that it was not only needed to ?flesh out? the Orchestral sound but also as a 'concert voice which is fully proven by the concertos andconcert overtures by the famous Capell-Meister Telemann'.Telemann?s Concerto In G Major is considered to be one of the earliest works for solo Viola and Orchestra and forms part of thecore repertoire for pupils and students. Full Score-This extraordinary work by Sofia Gubaidulina features the unusual combination of two solo violas and orchestra. It was commissioned by Kurt Masur who conducted its sensational premiere in 1999 with the New York Philharmonic. Thesubtitle “A Dedication to Mary and Martha ” refers to two New Testament figures whose contrasting experiences of worldly and spiritual love provide the dramatic stimulus for the music.

Antonio Vivaldi's twelve concertos op. 4 known by the name of 'La Stravaganza” were first mentioned as a collection of 'Concerti a 4” in the 1711 Foreword of 'L'Estro Armonico” op. 3. Their publication had to wait until 1716, when Estienne Roger issued them in two volumes of six concertos each. However, unlike the original announcement, 'La Stravaganza” is more than a collection of concertos for solo violin with string accompaniment: in five of the concertos the soloist is joined by a second solo violin or even by a solo violoncello (Concerto No. 7). The many reprints of 'La Stravaganza” bear witness to its popularity and widespread dissemination well into the 1730s. Besides the surviving prints, there is a significant body of handwritten sources containing alternative versions for seven of the concertos. Some of these manuscripts stem from the music library of Johann Georg Pisendel. This edition of 'La Stravaganza” is not only the first scholarly-critical edition, it is also the only complete edition available.
